The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Libraries seeks a collaborative, innovative and user-centered librarian to lead and expand research partnerships with faculty and scholars, contribute to student success, and develop research collections and outreach programs that support the study of the Middle East and Islam. Reporting to the Director of Research and Instructional Services, the successful candidate will work within a dynamic and flexible team structure in support of the research and teaching missions of the UNC Libraries. The Middle East & Islamic Studies Librarian is an integrated member of the UNC Libraries and collaborates regularly with librarians and staff across a variety of library units including, but not limited to, the Wilson Library (Special Collections), Digital Research Services, Resource Description & Management, and User Experience and Assessment. The Middle East & Islamic Studies Librarian also works closely with many campus and external partners, such as UNC Chapel Hill’s Center for Middle East and Islamic Studies; the Duke-UNC Consortium for Middle East Studies; regional consortia; and national and international groups to build interdisciplinary partnerships in support of local research, teaching, and learning needs. The UNC Libraries also collaborate closely with the Duke University Libraries in building cohesive Middle East & Islamic Studies collections in the Research Triangle. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has a strong commitment to Middle East and Islamic Studies, with strong emphasis on Arabic language and Persian Studies. The Center for Middle East and Islamic Studies is a member of the Duke-UNC Consortium for Middle East Studies, and one of 5 UNC Chapel Hill National Resource Centers. Faculty affiliated with the Center number more than 50 and represent 28 departments and disciplines across campus. In collaboration with campus programs, the UNC Libraries actively engage with faculty and students on research and programming; create partnerships in support of teaching and learning; and develop collections and services that support research throughout its lifecycle.
Education and Experience:
Required: Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program, or a related advanced degree. Written and spoken proficiency in Arabic or Persian. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Ability to work independently as well as excel in a dynamic, collaborative, team-based environment. Knowledge of historical, cultural, linguistic, and political issues of importance to scholars of the Middle East and Islamic Studies. Experience with library instruction, training, or classroom teaching. Knowledge of scholarly publishing and research dissemination practices in the Middle East and North Africa, including trends in digital scholarship. Experience with library research resources and tools in relevant subject areas. A commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment where differences and complexities in background, cultures, values and viewpoints are valued. Preferred: Knowledge of a second relevant language such as Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, Turkish or other languages of the region. Successful experience in fund-raising, donor relations, and/or grant-writing. Evidence of successful participation in collaborative projects. Experience with digital scholarship tools and projects. Experience with assessing the impact of library services and/or collections Experience with building research collections in an academic library.
