The Choices Program is a national education initiative affiliated with the Brown University Department of History. The Choices Program produces content for secondary school social studies classrooms on contested historic and contemporary issues. Through its content and programs for teachers, the Choices Program seeks to:
democratize knowledge and provide accessible educational resources in order to reach diverse classrooms from all corners of the United States and beyond.
create content and programming that emphasizes building historical thinking skills.
create curriculum materials that foster the skills for students and teachers to be critical consumers of information and engaged global citizens.
take advantage of new research and scholarship that challenges how history is understood and provides new insight into the dynamics that shape the world.
challenge traditional narratives and broaden understandings of history and current events.
produce narratives that are relevant to all communities, including ones that have been underrepresented in high school social studies curriculum and programming.
The Choices Program is hiring a Communications and Marketing Specialist. This position is responsible for Choices overall strategic marketing plan and annual budget development. The ideal candidate will have the ability to write marketing content and materials that articulate the Choices Programâ™s mission and broaden awareness of the brand. This person develops content for marketing (social media, website, e-newsletter, blog, targeted digital ads, and print materials) and works on communications platforms such as MailChimp, and social media scheduling systems such as TweetDeck. The Specialist serves as a liaison with internal and external constituents (Brown University Office of Communications, contractors, and vendors). The ideal candidate is creative, detail-oriented, resourceful, and organized.
Bachelorâ™s degree required with 2-3 yearâ™s experience in a marketing or communications setting or equivalent combination of education/experience.
Demonstrated interest in history or international relations.
Interest in and a passion for the mission of the Choices Program.
Ability to strategically create and carry out an annual marketing plan and budget.
Ability to write clearly and on deadline. Meticulous attention to detail.
Experience and skills in web, digital, and print design, newsletter platforms (MailChimp),
Experience with social media (Facebook, Twitter).
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to elicit and communicate information in a clear, informative and concise manner.
Strong organizational, administrative and time-management skills, plus initiative and judgment to problem solve and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to manage multiple tasks with competing priorities.
Ability to work independently as well as part of a collaborative team.
Excellent computer skills in word processing, email applications (Google environment), and spreadsheet/database management (including contact management databases).
Experience with website maintenance (Word Press).
Creativity, energy, patience, and reliability.
Basic photographic editing is a plus.
