The Pre-major Advising Director leads the Pre-major Advising Center team developing a robust academic exploration pathway for our diverse student population at various points in their academic career; deliver timely and accurate academic advising services grounded in best practices and research in advising, retention, and student success; closely collaborate with colleagues in the Center for Career and Talent Development to align academic and career pathway planning; and closely collaborate with colleagues in Admissions to support transfer students.
The Director will provide leadership in the development, coordination, implementation, and assessment of a comprehensive academic advising plan focused on academic exploration to support student self-assessment and identification of educational pathways leading to the fulfillment of students' professional and personal goals. Reporting to the Associate Provost for Academic Programs, the Director will collaborate with other units in Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Enrollment Management as well as the campus community to accomplish institutional student engagement, retention, and professional development goals.
In close collaboration with the Center for Career and Talent Development, the director will coordinate intentional and timely academic and professional exploratory programming.
Working closely with Admissions, the director will liaise with colleagues in the academic colleges to gain familiarity with unit offerings to participate in on and off campus programs with community colleges to support recruitment efforts, counsel prospective transfer students individually and in groups, and analyze and evaluate credits and time to degree.
Experience in planning, implementing, and assessing programming for student advising, recruitment, career counseling and/or retention activities, or related events like workshops, conferences, trainings, etc.
Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal, organizational, customer service, and time management skills
Demonstrated multicultural competence and experience successfully working with underrepresented students.
Demonstrated experience in supervising personnel and budget planning/management
Demonstrated experience working collaboratively and fostering communication and partnerships across departments.
Proven problem solving and conflict resolution skills; self-motivated; ability to work independently
Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
Ability to use current office software such as the Microsoft Office suite
Experience interpreting, applying university, state and federal policies/procedures.
Demonstrated experience in advising in a higher education academic setting.
Previous experience/knowledge working with Banner and/or Starfish.
Demonstrated experience with managing change, implementing new initiatives/projects and project management.
Experience working with transfer student populations or recruiting transfer students; ability to examine and assess college transcripts
Experience in career counseling or career coaching in an academic setting
Affiliation with the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) or related professional organization
