Summary Northwestern University Libraries seek a collaborative, innovative, and user-focused Head of Access Services to provide vision and leadership that ensures effective and efficient availability of library materials across locations and formats for campus constituencies and partner institutions. As director of services in circulation, resource sharing, document delivery, print and digital course reserves, media collections, branch libraries, and other operational and policy matters concerning access to library materials, the Head of Access Services has responsibility for managing staff and workflows in multiple areas of function and physical location. The Head of Access Services also collaborates actively with librarians and staff across the Libraries to achieve a consistently high level of access to library materials and to pursue continual innovation through technology that provides students, faculty, and researcher’s worldwide optimal access to the resources of Northwestern Libraries.
Serve as head of the Access Services department. Provide direction to more than 20 FTE, including one librarian and 4 other direct reports in managerial roles, whose responsibilities include circulation, resource sharing, document delivery, course reserves, and other user-facing services at several service points across multiple buildings on both the Evanston and Chicago campuses.
Collaborate with other librarians, staff, and technical specialists to develop, implement, and promote services that provide reliable availability and delivery of library resources in all formats.
Develop and communicate policies with other campus units as well as external and consortial partners.
Provide expertise in Alma, Ares, Avalon, ILLiad, WorldShareILL, and other systems and related operations that link library users with collections. Ensure the interoperability of underlying platforms to minimize barriers to access and maximize support for teaching, research, and learning.
Coordinate the management of personnel and services of multiple service points. These include the circulation desk and Mitchell Multimedia Center in University Library, the Mudd Library and Math Library branches on the Evanston campus, and the Schaffner Library on the Chicago campus.
Depending on background and service needs, serve as a liaison to one or more academic or other university constituencies.
Contribute to overall administration and leadership of library services as a member of the Operations Team, the Leadership Team, and other Libraries and University committees.
Engage in scholarly activities and provide service to the university and wider professional community, including representing Northwestern Libraries in projects and initiatives of the Big Ten Academic Alliance.
Graduate degree in librarianship from an ALA-accredited program or its equivalent
Minimum of five years of professional experience in academic libraries.
Substantial experience and demonstrated expertise in integrated operations and systems to support access and management of library materials, including circulation, reserves, and interlibrary loan functions and related systems, for example Alma, Ares, ILLiad, Relais D2D, WorldshareILL, and Canvas.
Knowledge of emerging trends and technologies in library materials access, including the provision of services at the local campus level and across multiple institutions and consortia.
Successful project-management experience, including coordinating functions and communications across reporting lines and service areas.
Supervisory experience in a library or higher education setting
