Reporting to and working in partnership with the Executive Director, the Associate Director of Administration is responsible for the development of strategic operational objectives and is responsible for department administrative functions, in particular faculty and academic affairs, human resources, graduate program administration, educational resources, administrative computing, and communications. The Associate Director of Administration serves as the primary liaison to the 400+ faculty, researchers and staff in the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology (OEB), the Museum of Comparative Zoology (MCZ), and the Harvard University Herbaria (HUH) on policies and procedures for all human resource and general administrative matters.
The Associate Director will play a key role in creating the administrative infrastructure required to provide first-class support to faculty, researchers, and staff in OEB, the MCZ, and the HUH. Management responsibilities include leading and coaching 30+ staff. Oversees programmatic activities including organizational design projects, administrative systems projects, computing resources, and operational support for new programs and activities. Works closely with Harvard University IT (HUIT), the Office of Labor and Employee Relations (LER), and the Office of General Counsel (OGC).
OEB Administration provides strategic planning and execution of all department administrative functions to three separate and distinct administrative entities: the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, the Museum of Comparative Zoology, and the Harvard University Herbaria. In addition, we work closely with the Program for Evolutionary Dynamics, the Arnold Arboretum and the Harvard Forest, which house our faculty and/or their research programs.

Minimum of 8 years leadership experience in an academic, research or related organization.
Minimum of a Bachelor's degree. In lieu of a degree a minimum of 10 years of experience is required.
Experience leading, managing, and building teams required.
Extensive experience in all areas of administration and operations - strategic planning; organizational design; human resources; administrative and academic program development, monitoring, and evaluation; administrative computing; financial analysis and reporting; sponsored research administration; overseas operations; staff and general management.
Demonstrated leadership, supervision, coaching and communications skills; understanding of principles behind organizational development. Experience serving as an expert source of information, with a collaborative and flexible style; developing trusting long-term relationships with constituents; and creating and maintaining a team culture with a commitment to unparalleled support services and discretion.
Ability to work collaboratively across all levels of an organization. Understanding of principles and trends in systems administration, data management, digital communications and social media. Harvard experience a plus.
