Director, Keith and Catherine Stein World Museum / School of the Arts Faculty Member
Boise State University’s new School of the Arts seeks to hire the inaugural Director of the digital and technologically infused Stein World Museum within a full-time, 10 month, tenure-track administrative/ academic faculty position, beginning as early as July 1, 2019. Rank and salary are competitive and commensurate with quality of practice, scholarship, academic research, extent of teaching experience, and current professional standing.
Located in the new 90,000sf, state-of the-art, Center for Visual Arts, scheduled to open in August 2019, the emergent Keith and Catherine Stein World Museum (final name pending) will serve as both an academic digital arts research center and an education destination for visitors. The World Museumoffers opportunities to explore and activate the key principles of interdisciplinarity, entrepreneurship, and community engagement vital in the new School of the Arts, making them visible and operational for the benefit of the campus and city communities.
The World Museum will feature curated digital representations of art and visual culture from around the world, introducing visitors to cultural sites and institutions to which they may not currently be able to travel. The space will also provide a venue for presenting new, innovative projects at the intersections of art, music, history, film, dance, theatre and technology. Finally, it will offer an immersive, interactive user experience inspiring visitors to relate creations in the local community with the maker ethic materialized in creative expression around the world.
The World Museum will utilize 4k, short throw projection; glass-surfaced touch foil; and movable floor projectors to create an immersive, CAVE-like user experience. Visitors will interact with the 940 sq. ft. immersive space through a variety of applications and platforms--touch, mobile device, beacon, 3-D models, as well as virtual and augmented reality. Visitors will also be able to experience the World Museum's content in both self-directed and guided modalities
Under the supervision of the Director of the School of the Arts, the ideal Inaugural World Museum Director
is an artistically curious and flexible individual whose background includes a range of creative output such as digital arts, time-based arts, sound art, new and emerging media, or other technology infused visual or performing arts media.
works in collaboration with Boise State faculty members from disciplines across Boise State, develops dynamic and exciting exhibitions and programs focused on the intersections of arts and technology that favor student engagement, public engagement, creative collaborations, and interdisciplinarity.
oversees and participates in all aspects of the Stein Family World Museumoperations, including development of strategic vision; academic and public programming and educational outreach; digital collections care, curation, and interpretation; fundraising and financial planning; marketing; facilities and equipment maintenance; and fostering staff, volunteer, advisory board, university, and community relations.
regularly collaborates with Boise State Campus Operations, and the School of the Arts faculty from the Departments of Art, Design & Visual Studies / Music / Theatre, Film and Creative Writing, Computer Science / Education Technology, the Gaming, Interactive Media and Mobile (GIMM) program and the Office of Information Technology.
acts as a magnetic instigator drawing in other outstanding arts faculty, as well as faculty in other disciplines seeking to incorporate the arts and technology into their work.
oversees recruitment, training, and supervision of staff, docents, volunteers, student interns, and World Museum related guest curators, visiting artists and scholars.
teaches one class per semester in a digital artistic practice or other relevant discipline related to the applicant’s expertise.
Terminal degree (PhD, or MFA) in a related field.
An excellent artistic/academic record, a commitment to quality teaching, and significant achievement in a related profession, or original research/creative activity/performance/exhibition record at a level commensurate with proposed rank.
Minimum of two years’ experience in an arts related field, research center, museum, and/or gallery setting emphasizing digital technology, including but not limited to projection, video mapping, digital displays.
Evidence of at least two years of teaching experience or other pedagogical engagement in digital arts, art education, museum studies with a technology emphasis, or other strongly related field beyond the level of a graduate teaching assistant.
Evidence of interest in interdisciplinary collaboration in and beyond the arts.
Basic computer programming/scripting experience
Ability to work with IT teams in maintenance and upgrade of projectors, displays, and computer hardware installations.
Strong knowledge of platforms for storing and managing digital assets.
Strong interest in working on teams to develop and implement interpretive curricula for a variety of audiences including but not limited to: university students, K-12 Idaho students, and visitors from the community and general public.
Experience with and strong knowledge of audio video installations and equipment for immersive experience.
Working knowledge of Unreal Engine, or Unity, or Godot game engines.
Strong understanding of 360 video capture and rendering with latest tool sets for 360 video in Adobe Premiere or equivalent software.
Ability to direct and train students in the utilization and management of physical immersive installations.
Experience working with audio/video vendors and contracted personnel in planning, installing, and upgrading projection and display equipment.
Ability to identify, install, and configure digital tools to improve processing workflow and access.
Strong knowledge of metadata standards such as MODS, BEXT, EAD, Dublin Core, MARC XML, PBCore, and IPTC.
