These partners work together as University of Iowa Health Care, to provide patient care, conduct biomedical research, and train the next generation of health professionals.
The COS leads and provides oversight for hospital administration to ensure alignment of strategies and activities with UIHC objectives so that established performance targets are met or exceeded.The COS works closely with, and in support of key enterprise stakeholders, including Departmental Executive Officers, the VPMA leadership team, campus leadership, and external stakeholders.The COS anticipates and prioritizes the activities of the CEO, ensuring timely follow-up from key leadership meetings and other matters of high priority to the CEO.The COS ensures appropriate follow-up on agreed upon actions of the leadership team; coordinates the review of content and development of proactive strategies to place the CEO in internal and external settings to best meet the organization's strategic priorities; gathers input and assembles research to inform the CEO in advance of public appearances; along with anticipating, prioritizing and coordinating activities and communications for the CEO. The COS works with senior leadership to address significant or sensitive institutional matters and provides oversight for the team of executive assistants that support the CEO.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
Work closely and effectively with Departmental Executive Officers
Drive excellence in all areas of operations by focusing on People, Quality, Service, Financial Stewardship and Clinical Growth. Define and track key performance measures, monitor progress, and consistently deliver results.
Develop and implement strategic operating plans and develop efficient, user-friendly systems to manage complex, detailed processes.
Oversee the operations, staff and budget of the office of the CEO.
Manage and establish Hospital Administration's annual operating expense budget. Review and recommend procurement and expenditures. Reconcile procurement to budget projections.
Work closely with CFO of UIHC to aid in establishment of annual enterprise operating and capital budget needs for designated areas and monitor performance to achieve targeted levels of fiscal performance.
Provide data analysis and report outs regarding clinical operations, productivity metrics, financial metrics, and strategic benchmarks to ensure operational, financial and strategic initiatives are being achieved.
Effectively build, lead and motivate teams of individuals with diverse skills and abilities.
Build collaborative, cross-functional relationships with the highest levels of physician and administrative leadership. Possess strong executive presence.
Superior demonstrated organizational, analytical, oral and written communication skills
Must possess strong interpersonal skills to facilitate effective relationships inside and outside of UIHC.
Must possess ability to function effectively in the face of ambiguity and possess excellent relationship-building skills.

Research diverse arrays of health care and policy related topics and distill the key messages in preparation for presentations.
Prepare speeches, presentations and talking points for the CEO on an array of topics and for a breadth of constituents including legislators, donors, and community organizations.
Facilitate communication and work closely with the leadership and executive management team of the Carver College of Medicine, UI Physicians Group and the Health Science Colleges in a timely and efficient manner. Work with central-University of Iowa departments on key initiatives for the UI Health Care enterprise.
Act as a representative for the CEO and ambassador to external constituents as requested.
A Master's Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required
10 years of experience in healthcare administration required
Comprehensive knowledge of complex health care systems including state and federal policy and statutory framework
Experience in collecting, reviewing, and analyzing data
Demonstrated experience with and/or commitment to diversity
Accomplished written and excellent verbal communication skills
Proficiency in a wide array of computer software applications
Proven financial and operational track record demonstrating an understanding of the key factors within the management of complex health care organizations
Proven ability to multi-task and meet pressing deadlines
Demonstrated record of successfully achieving strategic, operational, and financial results
Project management expertise
Proven success for driving results and instilling accountability throughout the team and organization
Proven collaborator and consensus builder that has a track record of successfully partnering with diverse constituencies
Knowledge of University of Iowa and UIHC policies and procedures
Proven ability to work successfully in an AMC environment, building successful and productive relationships with Departmental Chairs/DEO's
