Job Summary: Harvard's newly appointed Vice Provost for Advances in Learning is looking for an Associate Director of Strategy and Projects to support efforts to develop strategy and facilitate change in both on-line and residential education at Harvard. The ideal candidate will have a passion for education, and advanced degree (MBA or similar) and at least eight years of operations, project management or other administrative experience.
Duties and Responsibilities: Reporting jointly to the Vice Provost for Advances in Learning (VPAL) and the Executive Director of HarvardX, this position will play a critical role in advancing the VPAL's agenda. In support of the Vice Provost, Deputy Vice Provost, and Executive Director of HarvardX, advances and monitors progress on initiatives and proactively identifies, researches, and presents solutions on a range of priorities. The Associate Director of Strategy and Projects organizes and/or liaises with University offices, working groups, committees, and in communities of practice to ensure the timely and effective completion of projects of varying size and scope across strategic and operational domains. The Associate Director of Strategy and Projects develops and maintains internal and external communications to ensure consistent and appropriate messaging across multiple channels. The Associate Director of Strategy and Projects demonstrates the diplomacy, collaboration and constructive work style necessary to work effectively within matrixed teams and across multiple levels of the VPAL organization and partner groups within and external to the University. The Associate Director of Strategy and Projects is able to work effectively within a consistently busy academic environment, balancing competing demands, following up on identified actions, to ensure all work product is completed in a timely and effective manner.
Specific duties include:
Designs, implements and directs a portfolio of assigned strategic and operational projects, ensuring effective development, implementation, risk/benefit analysis, and completion. Ensures action items have been delegated, implemented, and completed.
Updates and proactively seeks and presents solutions and options for VPAL review on projects and initiatives.
Manages projects applying project management methodology most appropriate to the specific contexts and goal.
Organizes VPAL events and outreach activities with Harvard and external partners related to initiatives and projects.
Manages resources assigned to specific projects to ensure effective execution and success.
Drafts proposals, reports, presentations and other communications.
Researches, compiles, analyzes, and interprets data for ongoing effective decision making.
Represents the Vice Provost and/or the Deputy Director, within VPAL, but also within the university and in the wider community as appropriate.
Oversees and vets internal and external communication to build consistent and strategic messaging including the development of materials.
Facilitates the flow of communications to internal and external audiences, including committees, leadership, and staff.

Candidates MUST meet the following basic qualifications in order to be considered for this role:
Minimum of eight years of relevant work experience managing projects (advanced degree may count towards years of experience)
Demonstrated ability to write quickly, persuasively, and accurately
Proven data analysis skills
MBA or other advanced degree strongly preferred.
Interest in and knowledge of the ed tech space.
Strong project management experience applying multiple project management approaches in a variety of project types. Knowledge of project management methodologies.
Highly motivated and inquisitive, comfortable and able to drive initiatives.
Successful experience managing projects from start-up stage through operational implementation within a matrixed environment.
Enthusiasm and willingness to collaborate with project stakeholders and team members of varying organizational levels and disciplinary backgrounds.
Service oriented spirit with ability to support colleagues in meeting strategic objectives consistently.
Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills.
Successful experience balancing concurrent priorities and consistently busy workload.
Excellent attention to detail.
Ability to work effectively in an open office environment.
Prior experience handling confidential matters with appropriate discretion.
Prior experience developing communication materials and copyediting.
