The Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR) significantly influences and catalyzes the translation of investigative science into innovative improvements in clinical care and health policy. We educate, fund, connect, and support researchers and research communities, within and outside the University of Michigan, in order to create a positive impact on health across local, regional, national, and global scales.
Assist with the going development of the new Innovation Program at MICHR.
Play an integral part in laying the foundations including client needs, communication channels, service structure, evaluation methods, and metrics.
Design and help build digital products
Collaborate with teams, clients, and vendors to design interactions, experiences, and solutions for digital products. Examples include: https://michr.umich.edu and https://www.um-biostatnetwork.org/
Create deliverables like personas, scenarios, cognitive walkthroughs, wireframes, paper prototypes, high fidelity prototypes, and mockups.
Test designs by conducting user testing, observational studies, prototype testing, experience testing and A/B testing. Reiterate based on feedback.
Use content management systems such as Squarespace and Wordpress to build and maintain informational websites.
Perform project management tasks as required.
Provide design & innovation consulting to MICHR programs
Partner with MICHR programs to perform deep user research to understand client experiences as they exist and analyze areas for improvement.
In conjunction with the Innovation Director, lead participatory design process with MICHR leaders/staff and target client populations to ensure innovative program design and delivery.
In conjunction with the Innovation Director, lead teams in user research, empathy generation, journey mapping, problem identification, prototyping, iteration, delivery, and scaling.
Help create the strategy and design of a sustainable plan to scale the offerings emerging from these engagements.
Provide innovation leadership to MICHR partners
Drive projects with partners to help develop creative ways to conceptualize, administer, and conduct translational research.
Surface learnings from innovation successes and failures to build a robust translational innovation culture.
Build creative confidence among MICHR staff
Help conduct workshops and deep-dives for MICHR staff on innovation tools such as inception, ideation, prototyping, iteration, diverging and converging, and presentation.
Through talks, lunch & learns, information sharing activities, and discussion groups, help empower MICHR staff with the perspectives and skills needed to innovate in their work.
Present, publish, and disseminate learnings
Help disseminate innovations created to the broader research community through scientific publications, public consumption articles, conference talks, and presentations.
Add to MICHR's already stellar reputation of being leaders in the translational science realm.
Master's degree in interaction, graphic or industrial design; communication; or other related field OR Bachelor's degree in interaction, graphic or industrial design; communication; or other related field and 2 years’ experience.
Experience in planning and conducting human-centered qualitative research, insight generation, opportunity mapping, participatory design, solution development, prototyping and implementation in a complex setting.
Ability to generate empathy for customers and communicate that to various stakeholders.
Ability to make rough interactive prototypes
Demonstrated ability to nudge teams to human-centered solutions that solve real problems and offer great user experiences.
Works similar to an independent consultant with own set of clients.
Exceptional listening skills.
Demonstrated interest in and experience with design facilitation, including in design sprints, co-creation sessions, brainstorming workshops.
Demonstrated ability to work with digital content management.
Proficiency in software/hardware relevant and useful in user-centered design e.g. digital storytelling software, digital & physical prototyping, Adobe Creative Suite, HTML & CSS.
Must be capable of consulting, designing/conducting studies, and developing/implementing solutions
