We are in search of a seasoned Student Life professional who has strong proven experience to join our International House management team. Under the direction of the Chief of Strategy, the incumbent oversees a department of approximately one (1) career employee and 20 student workers, inclusive of thirteen Resident Assistants (RA's) and four (4) Security Monitors (SM's).
The Resident Support Services Manager is responsible for promoting a positive residential experience for every person living at International House, and for the safety and security of approximately 600 residents. Advises and regularly meets with residents to address personal and residential life issues, provides follow up, intervenes during residential crisis situations, responsible for providing intercultural conflict mediation and resolution, and conducts resident judicial misconduct reviews that are in violation of University and I-House community standards. Exercises mature judgment in crisis and confidential residential life situations to determine appropriate action.
Promotes I-House community development philosophy, communicates I-House policies and procedures, explains House services and responds to internal and external inquiries. Performs resident outreach. Holds consistent office hours in order to facilitate interactions with residents in resolving common issues or concerns. Provide crisis-intervention, support, referral and follow-up services to residents (i.e. refers residents with perceived psychological problems to the I-House Counselor or the Tang Center, refers residents who threaten the life and safety of others to the Police Department or other appropriate agencies, etc.) Primary staff member responsible for mediating resident conflicts, at times in consultation with Chief of Strategy, Executive Director and/or Admissions Director, meets with residents in conflict, facilitates communication between the affected parties, helps them to establish better relations and agreements that resolve the conflict, and follows up as needed. Conducts resident misconduct reviews when residents are in violation of University and I-House community standards. Responds to resident behavior that is inappropriate and not in accordance with House policies and procedures, as well as behavior that endangers the health and safety of residents and others and/or results in damage to House property. This responsibility involves confronting the behavior in question, completing incident reports, meeting with the residents and parties involved, investigating incidents, involving the Police, the Office for the Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination, the Tang Center, other campus departments whenever necessary and issuing sanctions, letters of warning and probation if appropriate. Develops and enforces the policies for social events held in areas such as the Game Room, the Great Hall and Gamble Lounge. Organizes and supervises community events such as: Town Hall Meetings, Special Coffee Hours, Floor Meetings, Health Worker Programs, Community-Building Activities, and social gatherings in designated areas of I-House.
Some Key Responsibilities:
Provides direct supervision, guidance and direction to 1.0 FTE Student Affairs staff person, and indirect supervision of thirteen Resident Assistants and three to four Security Monitors.
Acts as the designated Campus Security contact at I-House to record crime statistics and report them annually to UCPD as mandated by UC Berkeley and to be in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Act.
Works closely and in collaboration with a variety of campus entities: Police, Title IX-Sexual Assault and Harassment Office, Fire Marshall, Tang Center, Health Services, Office of Student Conduct, Disability Compliance Office, Students of Concerns Committee, I-House Counselor.
Acts as the I-House Coordinator of Special Housing Accommodations request for students with disabilities to be in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Acts as the in-house liaison to the I-House Residents Psychological Counselor(s) to ensure that residents in need are receiving assistance and follow-up.
Responsible for planning and coordinating of First Aid, CPR Training for all career staff at International House and is directly involved in the development of the house's Emergency Preparedness Plan.
Responsible for updating and revising the publication of the annual I-House Resident Handbook.
Responsible for planning and coordinating (minimally) twice-annual mandatory Disaster Survival trainings for new I-House residents and student staff.
Responsible for recruiting, hiring, training, and evaluating approximately 20 student workers annually. Provides direct supervision of one (1) FTE career employee and indirect supervision of thirteen Resident Assistants (RA's) who are 50% FTE student workers. Oversees the work of 2-4 I-House Student Health Workers, in partnership with the Tang Center, who directly supervises the health workers.
Supervises and coaches staff to ensure accountability and sets goals and objectives for the department. Ensures that these goals are being met according to established guidelines. Counsels and evaluates staff performance. Responsible for performance management of staff, including taking corrective action as needed.
Evaluates and recommends changes to programs, policies and procedures when improvement is needed.
Oversees student conduct at I-House and exercises judicial action in consultation with I-House Chief of Strategy and Executive Director. When appropriate, works in collaboration with the Office of Student Conduct.
Knowledge and Skills (typically required of the position):
Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
Strong skills in active listening, critical thinking, negotiation, problem solving, reasoning, organizing, written and verbal communication and multitasking.
Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs; (i.e., Word, Excel and PowerPoint).

Requirements and Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience and training. A typical background would include: a minimum of five (5) years of professional student life and development experience and demonstrated knowledge of student development theory and practice.
