Reporting directly to the College Dean, the Director will be responsible for planning, implementing, directing and administering all aspects of the human resources function at Northeastern University's College of Professional Studies and works as an extension of and in close collaboration with the University's Human Resources Management office. The Director will provide college-level leadership in the following areas of HR administration: recruitment, policy communication and guidance, employee orientation and training, performance management, employee relations and problem resolution, and general human resources operations. This is a senior generalist position in a lean organization, requiring a willingness and ability to act and administer in a very hands-on environment.
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Oversees, directs and manages all personnel functions for the College. Serves as an effective College liaison to the University's central Human Resources Management office.
Ensures that institutional human resources policies are implemented consistently and in accordance with federal and state laws. Participates in the formulation, interpretation and administration of college-specific human resource policies and procedures.
Manages employee relations issues, processes, and policies throughout assigned unit(s). Duties may include: responding to employee questions and concerns; recommending strategies to employees for resolving issues related to work; making referrals as appropriate; interpreting policies and procedures; developing, monitoring, and ensuring compliance with performance improvement plans; in conjunction with appropriate supervisors, issuing disciplinary action; managing reduction in force activities; managing for-cause terminations and non-renewals; and performing exit interviews.
Provides advice and consultative guidance to deans, directors, managers, and supervisors in all areas of HR planning and administration.
Identifies, develops, administers and assesses college-wide training and development programs, with an emphasis on employee orientation, professional development, the hiring process, performance evaluation, management and supervision, and reward and recognition. Helps to establish and manage programs and initiatives that provide proactive support and interventions to promote effective leadership and enhance the workplace climate.
Responsible for managing personnel record keeping related to new hires, employee appraisals, promotions, transfers, separations and exit interviews, as well as revisions associated with job descriptions. Manages and analyzes data and key statistics for recordkeeping, assessment and strategic purposes. Provides recommendation and conclusions to the College's senior management team.
Monitors visa and funding expirations.
Other duties as assigned by the Dean and Senior Associate Dean.
A Bachelor's degree in business administration, human resources management, or a related field required; a Master's degree in Human Resource Management or a related field preferred.
A minimum of eight years' relevant experience in full service human resources office, including a minimum of five years of supervisory/management experience.
The successful candidate will demonstrate success in providing professional advice on human resources matters and show a track record of good judgment and effective problem solving.
S/he also must possess well-developed skills in leadership, political acumen and consensus building and demonstrate a commitment to excellence, high ethical standards, professionalism and confidentiality.
Excellent project management skills required, including successful leadership of projects from planning phase through completion.
Superior communication skills required, with demonstrated skills in written and oral communication and the ability to make effective presentations to groups.
Ability to manage and analyze data for recordkeeping, assessment and strategic purposes.
Proficiency with HR information systems, web technology, Excel and Word.
