The Director of Financial Accounting and Reporting is responsible for ensuring complete, consistent, and accurate accounting and reporting of University financial activity. They manage the annual financial statement and financial report production process, oversee annual financial statement audit, and ensure University financial reporting compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. The Director provides guidance and acts as the primary resource to the University community on all financial accounting and reporting matters. They oversee managers and staff in the Financial Reporting and Accounting Operations groups. They work closely with the Office of Financial Strategy and Planning, Risk Management and Audit Services, the Office of Treasury Management, Harvard Management Company, the Alumni and Development Services, the Planned Giving Office, schools and other University units as well as with external parties such as auditors and actuaries.
Specific duties and responsibilities include the following:
Lead initiatives to help address accounting and financial management questions and/or opportunities in partnership with various University financial personnel.
Serve as a resource and advisor to the University community on activity that relates to and/or impacts accounting and reporting.
Provide strategic planning and design for changes to accounting and reporting.
Manage the University's annual financial statement and financial report production process.
Oversee Financial Reporting including the annual financial statements, external audit, interim reporting and forecasting, and direction of the analyst team that coordinates with schools and units.
Oversee Accounting Operations including fixed asset accounting, investment accounting, general accounting, and accounts receivable.
Act as business owner and University-wide advocate for University financial systems.
Present information related to year-end results to senior management and oversight committees
Act as liaison to Harvard Management Company (HMC) on matters relating to accounting for and reporting on investments held by the University in the endowment and General Operating Account to ensure proper accounting and reporting of the University's investment portfolio.
Act as liaison to the Alumni and Development Services Office and the Planned Giving Office relating to accounting for gifts and pledges made to the University to ensure proper accounting and reporting
Identify opportunities for accounting and reporting efficiencies within the University and provide the leadership to implement new policies and procedures.
Serve as lead coordinator for the University-wide Financial Managers Forum.

MBA and/or CPA designation
10+ years of work experience in accounting, finance, or related field.
Excellent oral and written communication, organization, and analytical skills

Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple projects on deadline
Strong computer and financial systems knowledge
Demonstrated expertise in software, including data base query tools, Excel, Word, and Power Point

Experience in not-for-profit/higher education arena a plus.
Expertise utilizing Oracle financial systems a plus
