Position Description: The Graphic/Multimedia Designer serves as a member of the Housing & Residential Life (HRL) Marketing & Communications team and provides strategic direction on overall departmental communication initiatives and strategies, primarily in the areas of website/application design & management, graphic design, and multimedia. Work includes development of web & email layouts/templates, graphic design, content creation, video production, photography, asset management and maintenance and management for all components of departmental websites and applications. Duties are completed under the supervision of the Marketing & Communications Coordinator.
Responsibilities:
DESIGN – 40%
Web Design • Serves as webmaster and designer for HRL websites/web applications • Serves as system administrator and department liaison for the HRL Drupal content management system (CMS) • Coordinates all aspects of a new website/application design, including requirement gathering, design prototyping, usability & user experience (UX) testing and ongoing maintenance • Design and codes website using, but not limited to HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, GitHub, and the Adobe Suite • Ensures World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) accessibility and UMN brand standards are met Graphic Design • Consults on and designs highly technical/experienced designs for University-wide publication, social media, and/or e-communications • Develops concepts and designs for promoting departmental initiatives and programs • Initiates and develops plans for graphic design products to support University communications and external relations strategies that promote a positive, high-quality image and are consistent with goals and standards STRATEGY – 30%
Communication Strategy • Directs and/or participates in the ideation of campaign design, planning, production, and measurement of a wide range of communications, designs, promotions, websites and social media • Consults and collaborates with HRL content authors/experts to determine production needs, evaluate staff service levels and needs, and recommend short and long-term strategies to meet emerging needs • Develops and designs style guides and standards that address color, text, and graphic standards and establish templates for presentations and brochures • Evaluates and assesses the communication/marketing plan, and the impact of communications pieces • Develops, writes and edits specialized content for communications and publications in print or electronic mediums including newsletters, emails, ads, brochures and the website • Works with facilities administrators, space managers and marketing staff to develop strategies and tactics on content, visuals and maintaining brand standards for space Social Media Strategy • Establishes and maintains all current and evolving social media and communication tools • Captures and translates useful social media metrics into a compelling narrative for internal stakeholders • Manages the integration of social media platforms (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, etc) into websites to enhance communications/information sharing with students and other HRL customers • Researches and integrates consumer technologies ranging from devices to digital platforms • Expands public and university knowledge of the department via social media, publications and University-wide opportunities in line with department strategy
MULTIMEDIA – 20%
• Develops and sources content that would include, but not limited to: website text and video content, blog posts, reviews, editorial, press releases, imagery and other materials as required • Identifies opportunities to use video elements as a more productive method to convey message • Manages multimedia equipment and budget • Serves as the primary photographer for departmental headshots, events and architectural shots • Manages digital assets
ADMINISTRATION & MANAGEMENT – 10%
• Develops and executes training & learning tools for web contributors, specifically to educate & develop HRL staff on our Drupal CMS • Manages Drupal CMS users and CMS staff training • Develops and executes training & learning tools for digital signage managers and social media managers in HRL • Provides leadership for departmental communications committee • Hires, trains and supervises HRL student staff (photographer, videographer, and graphic designer) • Serves as a resource and mentor for HRL student communications staff • Conducts research, analysis and planning for various website and social media related projects/initiatives • Documents business processes and tasks • Other duties as assigned
