Department/College Description The Image Permanence Institute (IPI) is an academic research center in the College of Art and Design at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) dedicated to supporting the preservation of cultural heritage collections in libraries, archives, and museums around the world. IPI achieves this mission by maintaining an active preservation research program that informs and advances professional-level education and training activities, publications, consulting services, and the development of practical preservation resources and tools.
IPIs research program is well known internationally for translating laboratory research into practical tools and resources that can be used by collections stewards to make well-informed decisions that enhance the long-term preservation of collections. IPIs primary audience is collections staff, including librarians, archivists, conservators, collections managers, and other allied professionals responsible for preserving cultural heritage collections.
IPI resides in a 7,000 square foot space in the Gannett building of the College of Art and Design at RIT and consists of fourteen full- and part-time staff members, including preservation research scientists, environmental management specialists, a materials testing researcher, web application and publication designers, and business operations personnel. The staff provides a wide range of expertise including research and dissemination skills applied collaboratively in conducting research initiatives, creating professional workshops and webinars, developing web applications and publications, and providing consulting services. All of these activities focus on assisting cultural institutions with improving their preservation programs and in most instances could not be duplicated by any other existing organization.
Detailed Job Description PLEASE NOTE: This is a full-time, one-year project position. At project conclusion, there may be additional research opportunities at IPI for the successful candidate.
This position will appeal to professionals with a commitment to the preservation of cultural heritage and preservation research. It offers the successful candidate the opportunity to lead important research assessment activities, work closely with the Image Permanence Institute's (IPI) diverse group of preservation experts, and strengthen project management, preservation research, and networking skills.
Reporting to the Executive Director of the Image Permanence Institute this is a full-time project position dedicated to a one-year preservation research assessment that will identify vital areas of preservation research need and current preservation challenges for collections professionals in libraries, archives, and museums. The Preservation Research Associate will engage and solicit feedback from colleagues throughout the preservation community via online surveys, travel to preservation research laboratories, and in-person working meetings hosted at RIT and organized in collaboration with IPI staff. Survey data will be analyzed and summarized to inform the working meeting discussions, and the outcomes of all assessment activities will inform IPI's research program priorities for 2021-2025. The position requires research experience, familiarity with the preservation field, and strong written and oral communication skills.
Develop and administer two online surveys about preservation research needs using online survey software.
Analyze the results of both surveys and write a report(s) that summarizes survey findings to inform working meeting agendas.
Visit national preservation research laboratories to inform survey development, gather suggestions for working meeting participants, and to learn about new research equipment and creative lab furnishing solutions.
Plan, organize, schedule, and serve as primary contact for, four working meetings hosted at IPI that convene collections, preservation research, conservation education, and RIT research professionals to inform future research agendas.
Write a final report that summarizes all of the information collected during the preservation research assessment activities for dissemination to the field.
Required Minimum Qualifications
This job requires a minimum of three years of research experience, research in a conservation or preservation research laboratory or advanced knowledge of the preservation field is preferred.
