The Social Environment and Health Program within the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research (ISR) examines social inequalities in health, including the role of structural and cultural racism, toxic and built environments, and the molecular pathways linking neighborhood context to health inequalities. Under the supervision of the Principal Investigators (PIs), the Data Manager/Curator will use data management and analysis techniques to process large georeferenced data files for multiple projects, including the Social Epigenomics of Racial Health Inequalities, Investigating Disability factors and promoting Environmental Access for Healthy Living (IDEAL RRTC), and the National Neighborhood Data Archive (NaNDA) projects. The focus will be on data reuse, and the development of standardized metrics to enhance repository processes, data use, and digital preservation. Requires knowledge and experience of how to plan, create, assess, improve, and disseminate data for user access and long-term preservation.
Perform data management tasks for multiple, large, nation-wide, sources of linked administrative, survey, and biomarker data covering 20+ years. Coordinate and supervise activities related to data creation and the adherence to data creation protocols, production of various deliverables, and writing supporting documents. Serve as a data management expert as it pertains to the projects’ data files that are available to data users. Subset existing data files, perform data quality control, merging, and new variable creation tasks using advanced programming. Build custom data sets for specific users as needed.
Develop, implement, and maintain standardized data management practices. Coordinate and oversee the necessary data documentation for the data files produced by multiple research staff. Collaborate with project PIs and project colleagues to share ideas and ensure consistency across the project’s data files. Develop and implement strategies to enhance usability and reproducibility of data. Create documentation compliant with the Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) metadata specification, creating a descriptive metadata record, assigning a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), standardizing missing values, as well as comprehensive documentation offering study-level information and detailed variable/question information (e.g., variable name and label, value labels, source code, and missing data definitions).
Provide quality control assurance for the projects’ data files. Collaborate with study team members to help detect potential issues in these data before they reach the users. Serve as project's secondary expert on the creation and management of these data files, and contribute as needed to their production/maintenance. Perform periodic data quality reviews to ensure accuracy and update data as necessary. Coordinate distribution and oversight of the data to internal and external users, per a predetermined data use protocol.
Perform independent critical analyses of pertinent literature. Contribute to research papers and manuscripts for publication and presentation at conferences and workshops. Contribute to the production of data tables, analyses and figures for the project's publications and reports.
A Master’s degree is necessary in a relevant field such as information science, social science, statistics or related informatics/statistical/quantitative science.
Three or more years of related experience is necessary.
Proficient in SAS and/or STATA, Python and SQL for data management and manipulation.
Highly organized with attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to work successfully in a team.
Strong communication skills.
Three or more years’ experience with large database management and analysis.
Expertise in programming in R and R-related languages for data creation and manipulation.
Demonstrated experience in writing technical reports of methods, and preparing written and graphical summaries of results and conclusions of data analyses.
