Please note: Program times are location-specific Organizational Background Horizons Greater Washington (HGW) is an academic and enrichment program designed to help students from low-income families in the DC-area reach their full potential. HGW supports over 370 students from 1st grade through 9th grade with year-round programming and support. Working in partnership with our families, sending schools, and host schools, HGW is committed to developing the whole child through experiences that build problem-solving skills, foster awareness of community responsibility, instill respect for self and others, encourage a lifelong interest in learning, and inspire a meaningful, choice-filled life. The program begins when a student enters 1st grade and extends until they enter 9th grade, allowing for a rewarding long-term relationship between a diverse set of learners and the nurturing staff who work with them every summer. Position Description Horizons Greater Washington is seeking a dedicated and effective STEAM Teacher to further enhance our culture of creativity, innovation, and experimentation by melding the diverse disciplines of math, science, art, engineering, design, architecture, and more. Using design thinking, the STEAM Teacher will assist, support, and encourage students as they learn new skills for developing ideas and experience both success and failure in a highly collaborative setting.
Job Responsibilities The STEAM Teacher's areas of direct responsibility include, but are not limited to, the following: - Develop and deliver appropriate curricula for students in grades 1-9 that are aligned with the practices and principles outlined in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and integrated in cross-curricular lesson extensions
- Develop and deliver robotics curriculum for students in grades 5 and 6 using available resources
- Deliver instruction and guidance to students while in the makerspace
- On an as-needed basis, coordinate and mentor teachers as to the successful implementation of design thinking
- Research, develop, and innovate maker activities
- Inventory and maintain all makerspace pace materials, tools and equipment, including hardware and software
- Work one-on-one with students or in groups to ideate, prototype and present projects
- Maintain a safe and efficient learning environment
- Provide technical support of project documentation (video, photo, blog/vlog, digital portfolio, social media, etc.)
- Lead students in building time-management and project planning skills
- Plan and coordinate a multi-site culminating robotics showcase with students in 5th-6th grade
Minimum Qualifications - Working knowledge of NGSS
- Experience and comfort with technology, engineering, design, science, art, and craft
- Strong classroom management skills
- Experience and strong interest in working with middle and high school students
- An action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to teaching
Preferred Qualifications - Valid and applicable teaching credential highly desirable, but candidates with substantial teaching and/or classroom experience will also be considered
- Working knowledge of design thinking methodologies
