The Writer/Media Relations Specialist develops and writes content for college-wide communication initiatives, media relations and marketing materials, electronic communications, and other printed materials that increases the college's brand; serves as an editor for college-wide marketing materials; and a key member of the communications team. The Writer/Media Relations Specialist defines key messaging, has discretion over college-wide periodicals and recommends appropriate communication channels to advance Hennepin Technical College's mission.
The Writer/Media Relations Specialist supports and executes communication and media relations activities to promote and protect Hennepin Technical College's brand and has a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
Specific duties include:
Develop, write and edit content for college-wide publications, newsletters, press releases, reports, speeches, website and other related materials to advance Hennepin Technical College's mission and brand.
Research, verify sources, and conduct interviews necessary to develop publications, presentations, digital content, press releases, speeches, news articles or other marketing/communications materials.
Write content and manage social media channels including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
Develop, execute and manage media relations strategies and plans to support the College's overall activities. Develop and manage relationships with a wide range of media outlets.
Perform copy-writing tasks, edit materials and recommend revisions or changes to scope, format and content.
Develop production timelines, storyboards, and maintain centralized record and documentation system.
NOTE: Must be available to work occasional evenings and weekends and able to travel between campuses as well as other local and regional venues.

Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution;
Minimum 3 years of experience as content or media relations writing;
Demonstrated experience interviewing individuals, developing relations, and checking source information;
Excellent writing skills sufficient to write editorials, blogs, newsletters, press releases, digital content and speeches;
Proficient in word processing and using current desktop software;
Proficient with either AP or MLA Style Guide;
Demonstrated experience in creating and curating online content and managing social medial channels;
Ability to write and organize writing assignments quickly, proficiently, accurately, strategically and under pressure;
Experience editing content in design software such as Adobe Indesign and Illustrator;
Ability to coordinate incoming media request and respond in a timely manner;
Demonstrated ability to work well in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment;
Ability to travel between campuses as well as other local and regional venues; and
Ability to move up to 15 pounds.
Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English or Communication from a regionally accredited institution;
5 years of relevant experience as a writer in the areas of Media Relations and Communications;
Demonstrated success pitching stories to major news media; and
Experience developing written communications projects, proof-reading, and editing including the ability to effectively communicate with internal and external clients, co-workers and vendors
