Overview
The Associate Project Manager manages daytoday work execution, including the timely mitigation of risks and resolution of emergent issues, and ensures the work is completed on time, within budget and in accordance with applicable Laboratory policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Assists the Project Manager in developing or updating project plans and communicating them to assigned staff, contractors and suppliers.
- Ensuring assigned areas are adequately resourced with trained and qualified personnel and taking prompt action with the Project Manager to address identified weaknesses and gaps.
- Supervises and directs assigned staff and contractors and holds them accountable for meeting project requirements and goals.
- Oversees performance in assigned areas, identifies problems and barriers and takes or engages the Project Manager in their prompt mitigation or elimination.
- Communicates and works with project team and PPPL stakeholders and peers to ensure that interfaces are effectively managed.
- Works transparently with the Project Manager and NSTX-U team - notifies the Project
- Manager promptly of conditions, events or emergent issues that may compromise safe and successful project completion.
- Serves as the Cost Account Manager for assigned scope, including:
- Verifying work progress
- Reporting progress monthly to project team
- Reviewing, analyzing and addressing project variances
- Reviewing Estimate to Complete/Estimate at Completion (EAC/ETC) and developing new estimates, as required
- Initiating timely change requests, as required
- Ensuring job charges recorded against the NSTX-U budget are accurate and reasonable.
Qualifications
- Bachelor degree in science or engineering.
- Fifteen years of experience in managing complex projects at Department of Energy laboratories or commercial nuclear power plants.
- Project Management certification and/or PMP (preferred).
- DOE O 413.3B experience (preferred).
- Effective leadership skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Confidence and demonstrated ability to manage across a broad range of work activities and technical disciplines involving a diverse spectrum of professional and non-professional personnel.
- Experience in leading unique, one-of-a-kind projects and applying Earned Value Management system(s) and principles.
- Strong analytical skills and demonstrated experience in making timely, risk informed decisions.
- Demonstrated teaming skills, including the ability to work effectively with peers, other organizations, project sponsors and stakeholders and suppliers.
