Photography and Art Appreciation Instructor, Middle, and Upper School, Full-Time
The Nightingale-Bamford School seeks a full-time photography teacher to begin in late August, 2019.
Founded by two bold, visionary entrepreneurs in 1920–the same year that women won the right to vote–The Nightingale-Bamford School gives girls from diverse backgrounds a rigorous college preparatory education. The school is widely recognized as one of the top girls’ schools in the country. There are currently 655 students enrolled in the school (Lower School 223; Middle School 198 and Upper School 234). Average class size is 12, student to faculty ratio is 6:1. The school is located on the Upper East Side in Manhattan, in the Carnegie Hill neighborhood, near many museums and Central Park. The ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree in art education or a Master’s of Fine Arts with a concentration in photography (both analog and digital), experience in maintaining a traditional black-and-white darkroom, an extensive knowledge of Photoshop, a background in art history, and a minimum of five years of classroom teaching, grades V-XII. This person should have a passion for fostering the creative expression and championing the artistic endeavors of all students at every age level.
Responsibilities include teaching darkroom photography as part of a required art rotation in grades V, and VII, team teaching the Class VI Museum Studies course in collaboration with our Director of Visual Education, and teaching elective courses in traditional processes and digital photography in the Upper School.
The candidate should be prepared to work collaboratively with the other members of the art department, and faculty and staff in general. The Art Department nurtures and encourages traditional craft skills as well as fine art in a contemporary context.
Nightingale is a community where faculty and staff participate wholly in the life of the school – from attending student performances and sporting events, to chaperoning trips and fulfilling duties in all divisions. It is expected that this teacher should be a fully present member of the school community.
