Collect data to maintain an informed and up-to-date perspective on library financial and operating performance vs. plans; a fact-based understanding of underlying causes of any variances; and implications for the library and the University
Survey relevant external sources to synthesize trends in libraries and in the broader information industries; analyze and articulate the associated opportunities and risks for the library
Provide thoughtful problem-structuring and appropriate ad hoc data, analysis and synthesis
Work with Library Technology Services (LTS), and all areas within the Harvard Library and Harvard College Library to enhance and expand tools that enable managers to make data-driven decisions
Liaise with University financial planning offices and the Faculty of Arts Sciences to provide ad hoc data as needed
Craft communications to various leadership bodies; deliver said communications as appropriate
Staff management: Develop, supervise and support a team of three people to ensure efficient and effective operations and customer service
Ensure coverage at all times for the financial operations, cross-train to achieve coverage, establish professional and personal development goals for staff, and conduct performance reviews.
Work with the Director of Administration for Harvard Library and Harvard College Library to hire staff when needed, with attention toward University values in staff development.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, advanced Excel skills
Advanced knowledge of budget management, financial analysis and financial modeling; working knowledge of accounting principles
Demonstrated experience with financial systems and data query tools
Strong analytic and financial skills and commensurate understanding of financial tools and analysis
Exceptional numeric skills: able to use numbers to explore issues and express logic, able to translate numeric results into underlying issues and organizational implications
