POSITION SUMMARY The Associate Dean for International Programs and Development (ADIPD) leads Saint Martin’s University’s international initiatives and supervises the provision of language instruction and support services for international students. The ADIPD develops and implements the international strategy on behalf of Saint Martin’s University, and actively collaborates with Deans, senior leaders, the President, and Board of Trustees on international cooperative programs, international partner relationships, international enrollment management strategies, and international recruitment initiatives. The ADIPD develops and maintains relationships with international partner organizations, sister universities, public and private organizations, and educational agencies as well as alumni, friends, and the community at large. The ADIPD supervises the Office of International Programs and Development (OIPD), which is responsible for compliance with federal regulations and for providing services to international students. The OIPD also provides English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction and hosts non-credit curricular and co-curricular activites for international students, as well as supports the SMU study abroad and away programs. The ability to work with multiple diverse constituencies internationally in a collaborative manner is vital. This position serves as a member of the Provost’s Council. Internationalization and development leadership - Plans and executes, under the leadership of the President and Provost, and in collaboration with faculty members, deans, and other leaders, international programs and services, including specific initiatives, as necessary.
- Oversees ESL accreditation ensuring alignment with the professional accreditation standards and ensuring documentation and measurement of student learning outcomes that corresponds to accreditation criteria. Prepares accreditation and assessment reports.
- Monitors and oversees international cooperative programs, international teaching and research, international enrollment management initiatives, international partner relationships, and international recruitment initiatives.
- Works with the President and other executive officers to maintain and enhance global competencies in academic programs aligned with the University’s mission. Implement the principles and practices of international education.
- In conjunction with the marketing and communications department, creates a focused plan for communicating the University’s vision and needs for internationalization internally and externally. Develops strategic cultivation and build strong relationships with current, prospective and new international partners.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with relevant stakeholders.
Develops and implements strategies for conducting prospect research and cultivation, stewardship of existing international partner relationships, and raising overall international engagement to higher levels. - Generates regular reports and updates regarding Office of International Programs and Development activities and initiatives.
- Develops and manages an annual plan for International Programs and Development that supports the objectives of the University's strategic plan. In particular, supports curricular and co-curricular programs to cultivate an engaged diverse,global and inclusive community.
- Serves as a liaison between the University and its stakeholders including public and private international organizations, sister universities, government officials, international education agencies and representatives, and international alumni and friends of Saint Martin's University. Travels internationally for the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of international partner relationships and cooperative programs.
- Develops and oversees an annual plan for the International Programs division that supports and implements the objectives of the University’s strategic plan. Manage the initiatives of the strategic plan.
- Works closely with the Board of Trustees International Programs Committee in overseeing internationalization goals and achievements.
Departmental leadership - Strengthens systems and operations within the Office of International Programs and Development:
- Provides leadership for and management oversight for the department and its reporting units: international student services, study abroad, SEVIS compliance, ESL, cultural exchange, host family programs, and international student engagement and academic success.
- Coordinates with department staff to create better systems and utilization of data for developing new strategies for international student engagement and comprehensive internationalization.
- Mentors and empowers staff to oversee and be accountable for their respective areas. Hire, supervise and evaluate departmental staff with the assistance of the Executive Director.
- Prepares realistic and relevant budgets for the International Programs division, and administers approved budgets within established guidelines.
- Oversees annual budget, income and activity projections for International Programs and Development.
ESL Program Management - Assesses the ESL curriculum to ensure alignment with the professional accreditation standards, ensuring documentation and measurement of student learning outcomes that correspond to accreditation criteria.
- Draws on professional expertise in the field of TESOL to provide instructional leadership to the ESL faculty.
- Designs TEFL programs and curriculum for pre-service and in-service English language teachers and English professors.
- Designs and conducts theoretical TEFL workshops on topics including but not limited to linguistics, second language acquisition, phonetics, phonology, teaching methodologies, the Cognitive Academic Language Learning Approach (CALLA), andragogy, and learning strategy instruction.
- Designs and conducts practical TEFL workshops to demonstrate and model effective pedagogical approaches and techniques for teaching writing, reading, speaking, listening, grammar, and vocabulary.
- Assesses the ESL curriculum to ensure alignment with the professional accreditation standards, ensuring documentation and measurement of student learning outcomes corresponding to accreditation criteria.
- Ensures implementation of curricular changes required by the professional accreditation to ensure institutional compliance.
- Manages hiring, training, and evaluation of contingent ESL faculty.
- Oversees ESL faculty advising and mentoring.
- Facilitates ESL students’ matriculation process, ensuring students have a supportive and positive transition from ESL to undergraduate study.
- Develops and implements student-centered assessment methods to improve the quality of teaching, learning, and student satisfaction in the ESL program.
- Develops and implements curricular and co-curricular programming to assist ESL students with engaging with the academic community, including faculty, staff, non-international students, etc.
- Manages the accreditation process, completing and submitting all required documentation required by the professional accreditation organization.
- Manages ESL course scheduling, ESL placement testing, ESL student registration, and other administrative duties as assigned.
Other functions - Serves as a member of the extended Provost’s Council and as a staff member of the Board of Trustees International Programs Committee. May serve on other planning and policy-making committees.
