Since her arrival in August 2017 as Carolina’s Vice Provost for University Libraries and University Librarian (Vice Provost), Ms. Westbrooks has infused new energy and vision into the Library and is redefining what it means to be a research library in the digital age. She has hired new senior staff members, articulated a strategic framework, and identified funding priorities for the campaign. The Executive Director will benefit from the Vice Provost’s personal commitment to invest significant time, energy, and resources to building philanthropic support for the Library.
Reporting to the Vice Provost with a dotted line report to the Executive Director of Development for Constituent Programs, the Executive Director will act as the chief development officer for the Library and provide strategic direction and leadership for a best-in-class development program, serving as principal advisor on all development matters. The Executive Director will assess the existing development operation and establish priorities, objectives, and best practices for a proactive, high-performing development program and team to support a significant increase in fundraising capacity and success. In addition, the Executive Director will support the Vice Provost’s fundraising activities with select principal gift prospects and donors, and personally manage a portfolio of top prospects to cultivate and solicit major and principal gifts.
The Executive Director will work closely with key partners, particularly LLT colleagues, using their time and talents to increase engagement and philanthropic support, as well as to promote a culture of philanthropy. The Executive Director will maintain and expand ties with existing donors while also providing entrepreneurial leadership to the Library, launching strategic initiatives to identify new revenue sources and seeking new philanthropic opportunities. In conjunction with the University Development Office (UDO), the Executive Director will set strategy and lead the Library team to achieve the Library’s campaign goal. The Executive Director will be active and visible on campus and in the local community, will possess a deep appreciation for and ability to clearly articulate the achievements and aspirations of the Library.
The ideal candidate must be a self-starter who thinks strategically, analytically, and entrepreneurially and is able to transform new ideas into executable and enduring programs. In addition, the ideal candidate will have demonstrated success working in a complex environment serving multiple constituencies, and possess the energy and enthusiasm to promote the Library’s mission to a diverse audience. The Executive Director will have a proven track record of strengthening development programs and raising significant major and principal gifts from unaffiliated individuals as well as corporations and foundations. The ideal candidate will have proven success leading development staff through the process of setting and achieving aggressive annual and long-range fundraising goals to support campaign priorities. The individual should have a collegial, collaborative, and accessible leadership style with a proven ability to mentor and motivate staff to keep them engaged, energized, and focused on achieving results. The next Executive Director will have at least seven years of relevant development experience, preferably in a complex research university setting. A bachelor’s degree is required.
