The School of Business Office of Communications is seeking a full-time Graphic Designer/Illustrator 3. The incumbent will report to the School’s Marketing & Publicity Manager and will create highly complex designs and illustrations for promotional, educational, technical and informational materials, and will also be responsible for the design of print and digital publications. The position will be based at the Storrs campus. Evening and weekend hours may be required on occasion in order to meet project deadlines. Occasional in-state and out-of-state travel may also be required on occasion in support of office needs.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Independently designing, sketching, arranging and determining elements of graphics for complex design projects which employ the use of photographs, illustrations and other design elements, and projects which require complex color processing and finish techniques.
Preparing complex camera-ready mechanicals, as well as high-resolution digital files, for production.
Planning layout and production of magazines, newsletters and School reports; producing promotional material; assisting in the design of websites, interactive media and other multimedia outlets.
Researching ideas and materials presented for design or illustration and making decisions regarding proper visual interpretation.
Serving as a consultant to faculty, staff, and other constituents regarding the most effective design and techniques to produce desired visual effect; recommending solutions to design problems.
Drawing three-dimensional graphs and charts, which portray complex relationships.
Consulting with the Office of Communications production team regarding publication needs, audience goals, deadlines, etc.
Independently planning layout, design and form of publications, exercising originality and creativity in developing proper focus of the publication to generate desired response.
Overseeing production of design work, including attending press checks when necessary.
Monitoring the status of all graphic design projects; coordinating with outside agencies, art services, web designers, printers and others as necessary.
Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or related field, or equivalent experience and training.
At least five years of professional experience in graphic arts or a related field.
Demonstrated experience with creative design software.
Demonstrated knowledge of typography, color and production.
Demonstrated creative ability and design skills as demonstrated by portfolio.
Demonstrated ability to solve complex design problems.
Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills including proven experience working effectively with faculty, staff, students and external constituents.
Demonstrated ability to interact constructively with production team members and clients.
Demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines, follow workflow, take initiative, and work independently to carry out difficult assignments without supervision.
Demonstrated ability to multitask and oversee multiple projects at one time.
Demonstrated ability to receive and accept criticism and use the feedback in a constructive way for an acceptable outcome.
Willingness and ability to work evening and weekend hours on occasion in order to meet project deadlines.
Willingness and ability to travel in-state and out-of-state on occasion in support of office needs.
Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or a related field.
Demonstrated experience with Adobe Creative Cloud software.
Demonstrated understanding of marketing, website design and multimedia design in a university setting.
This is a full-time position based in Storrs.
