The Bates College George and Helen Ladd Library is searching for an Associate College Librarian for Research Services. Working in partnership with a new Vice President of Bates’ merged Information and Library Services (ILS), the Associate College Librarian serves in a senior leadership role within the Library and in the College community. This position is responsible for leading a team of professional research librarians and managing research and instruction services and operations. This position functions as a liaison with the Bates community and directs the Library in the Librarian’s absence or as needed. As principal associate librarian, the Associate College Librarian for Research Services serves as a statutory (non-tenured) member of the Faculty, a member of the CBB (Colby-Bates-Bowdoin) Governing Board, which shares both print and electronic resources and a joint catalog, and will pursue opportunities for increased collaboration within the Board and across the Oberlin Group.
The responsibilities of this position also include serving as a subject librarian in appropriate areas of expertise, and as a member of the Information and Library Services management team. In addition to working with close ILS partners, such as the Curricular and Research Computing group, the Associate College Librarian will help envision and implement library support for exciting new initiatives in the digital humanities, open educational resources, and Bates’ new Digital and Computational Studies program. We are looking for a collaborative colleague who is dynamic, innovative, and willing to think creatively about the future of the academic library. This position supervises librarians and other staff engaged in reference and instructional services, and oversees the ILLiad operations and its staff.
Manages research, instructional and the ILLiad operations of the Library and supervises staff in these areas. Has a strong appreciation for the work of Research Services with both faculty and student researchers.
Acts in a leadership capacity with the Librarian and the Library Management team to maintain, improve and develop facilities, services, programs, policies and procedures for both the Bates College Library and CBB activities related to the Library. Directs the Library in the absence of the Librarian.
Provides leadership in the assessment, development and implementation of new research services and works with Bates Information and Library Services staff and partner constituencies, including Colby and Bowdoin libraries and technology organizations, to identify and take advantage of the expanding array of services made possible by electronic information sources.
Works with colleagues in the department, faculty members, and other academic support staff to plan, deliver and support a technologically dynamic, collaborative, and accessible learning environment across the curriculum. Actively tracks emerging trends in pedagogy and technology while eagerly experimenting with new approaches to scholarly content creation/presentation.
Works as a subject liaison with faculty and staff to build collections, both print and online, to best meet the curricular and programmatic needs of the College. Serves as an advocate within the Library for scholarly collection development.
Provides general research assistance during regular, evening, and weekend hours as well as specialized, in-depth research consultation to faculty and students. Leads and participates in classroom instruction and group workshops. Provides general orientations and tours as appropriate.
Oversees the design, development and maintenance of the Library website to promote discovery, use, and integration of the library collection. Coordinates library programming to highlight collections and link library services to campus events and scholarship.
Represents the Bates College Library both internally and externally via presentations at conferences, participation on boards and planning committees, and attendance at events.
Additional Job Functions:
Serves on Library, ILS, and College-wide committees, the CBB Governing Board, and task forces as assigned.
Regularly promotes significant changes in Library resources, activities, and policies to Library constituents.
Represents the Library in state, regional, and national forums in matters related to research and instructional services.
Performs other position-related duties as assigned.
This is full-time, 12-month staff position. Occasional travel including day and overnight trips may be required.
The successful candidate will have a Master’s degree in library science, information science, other advanced degree in field related to the position or equivalent combination of education and experience.
The ideal candidate will have:
7+ years of experience in an academic library preferred, including advanced library skills in research and instructional services.
Teaching experience in library or information literacy instruction, or related areas.
Demonstrated experience working on digital projects that bring together librarians and instructional technologists with a focus on pedagogy.
Demonstrated participation in or development of innovative instruction programs, particularly those that use technology to enhance student learning.
Exceptional management skills, ability to mentor, advise, and develop full-time and student staff.
Ability to work independently and with flexibility to adapt to change required.
Demonstrated ability to foster teamwork and work effectively with faculty and staff at all levels of the College.
Strong interpersonal skills with ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships with students, staff, faculty and co-workers.
Excellent communication (written, verbal & listening) skills.
Excellent analytical and problem solving skills; ability to synthesize complex or diverse information.
Commitment to user-oriented public service and evidence of creative approaches to service problems.
Familiarity with current research and publishing trends for faculty and undergraduate students.
