The Department of Criminal Justice is firmly grounded in the educational model of criminal justice which emphasizes the social scientific study of crime and criminal justice. Exposure to theory and research are the foundations of such an approach. Our students not only consume what theory and research tells us about crime and justice, they are also encouraged to be active participants in the process by which knowledge is created and disseminated. A variety of opportunities exist for our students to engage in active research projects and to present the results of that research.
The Center for Public Safety Initiatives is a unique collaboration between the City of Rochester, the criminal justice agencies of Greater Rochester including the Rochester Police Department and Rochester Institute of Technology. Its purpose is to contribute to criminal justice strategy through research, policy analysis and evaluation. Its educational goals include training graduate and undergraduate students in strategic planning and policy analysis.
The foundation of the Center is the practice of action research in which relevant data and analyses are brought to bear on the day to day decision-making processes of organizations. The Center serves the practice of policy development and implementation in real-time.
Faculty, graduate students and undergraduate students are currently working on projects through the Center for Public Safety Initiatives. The Center for Public Safety Initiatives actively seeks projects where it can bring to bear its unique partnerships, research skills and educational commitments.
Detailed Job Description
The Research Assistant works closely with management staff at the Center for Public Safety Initiatives. The researcher will work with Center for Public Safety Initiatives research staff and students to design research projects and subsequently complete evaluations and assessments. The Research Assistant is expected to work independently primarily and to work collaboratively with other researchers and the Principle Investigator. The researcher should have strong writing; critical thinking skills, interest in community issues and a strong knowledge of research design, and be able to perform extensive data analysis. Some travel is required and associated costs will be reimbursed.
Designs and oversees research plans on numerous projects
Assist in data gathering, analysis and dissemination of data
Works with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and SPSS software
Attends Community/ Meetings with Partners, presents findings
Required Minimum Qualifications
1 year minimum experience in research writing
1 year minimum performing evaluations.
1 year experience in Project Management.
1 year experience in performing research assessments
Knowledge of academic/research supported writing
Familiarity with Criminal Justice models, and interventions
Knowledgeable in data collection.
Able to analyze large data sets
Proficient in Excel, SPSS.
Rising B.S/M.S. in Criminal Justice or Bachelors in Criminal Justice preferred.
