Essential Job Duties:
The primary focus of the Design Assistant is to support the professional team in tasks related to design assistance, action research projects, print/online professional resource creation, and professional development and training activities
Primary tasks include:
Work closely with the NLI professional team (including design, child development, action research, professional development – online and face-to-face, and communication activities) to support design and research projects.
Assist in designing outdoor environments where children and families are primary users.
Assist in research, both collecting and processing data.
Assist in planning workshops, training, webinars and courses.
Assist with creation and dissemination of print and online educational and technical materials for landscape and building designers, teachers, parents, government staff, public officials, and related community stakeholders.
Assist in project site visits, photography, physical measurements, and preparation of base documentation.
Assist with design and installation of demonstration, R&D sites.
Render designs both by hand and using digital tools and platforms.
Maintain archival systems for photos and other design elements.
Contribute to the compilation of recommended plant lists for children’s environments, both locally and nationally.
Assist in compiling content and contributing to the design of flyers, information sheets, posters, program documents, presentations (including creating graphics and diagrams) to communicate NLI's research findings and design resources.
Assist with managing project equipment and supplies.
Other Work Responsibilities include:
Occasional travel required
Adhering to NLI best practice design and research protocols
Attending internal training sessions
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree, or relevant Bachelor’s degree plus 3 or more years of independent research experience, or substantative relevant independent experience and education. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Demonstrated skills in design of small scale outdoor environments
Developed knowledge of plants and planting design
Ability to communicate effectively with children and adult clients
Excellent technical writing and team work skills
Proficiency with AutoCAD; Microsoft Office, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator, or similar software
Knowledge of the theory and practice of environment-behavior approaches to community-based landscape design
Experience with online distance education systems
Proficiency with verbal and written communication
Capacity to work independently.
