Essential Job Duties:
The Digital Communications Specialist reports to and supports the Communications Director in promoting the vision, mission, and core values of the Institute for Emerging Issues. This position also promotes the work of IEI professional staff to both internal and external constituents through an array of digital marketing efforts.
The primary responsibility of the Digital Communications Specialist is reporting and writing of news stories, web features and coordinating with other communications, and media relations professionals regarding the work of the Institutes professional staff and initiatives. This position will help to identify stories by networking with various departments and offices within the university and community at large. This position will be responsible for the creation of the Emerging Issues Newsletter, IEI feature stories page, and assist with the preparation of any other digital related content.
In addition, this position will help promote IEI content to both internal University audiences and the community, including researching, pitching stories to Media Relations Team, developing relationships with journalists over time, and helping to spread the word about the Institute for Emerging Issues and the work of its staff.
The Digital Communications Specialist will also serve as the institutes Social Media manager, to promote our work and respond to others with whom we interact. Other responsibilities include routine web editing, providing updated information regarding programs and events that may be featured on our digital displays, helping to organize/conduct photo and video shoots, and participating as a member of the Communications creative team, which includes working with other team members to continually evaluate and refine our marketing and communications. This person will also assist in developing new ways to raise the visibility of IEI.
Coordinate and author weekly email communications in the form of the Institute Newsletter.
Gather and coordinate the Institutes news stories to include content, photos, videos and any other creative media.
Work closely with Graphic Design team to produce marketing content relevant to the University and Institute to be utilized on mass communication channels and social media channels.
Design, build and maintain our social media presence.
Plan and execute, social media and advertising campaigns.
Identify and evaluate trends and insights within the field of social media marketing.
Ensure IEI social media channels are in compliance with the University's social media policy and adhere to the University's Brand Standards.
Measure and report performance of all digital marketing campaigns.
Brainstorm new and creative growth strategies.
Collaborate with internal teams to create landing pages and optimize user experience.
Work independently and within a team on special nonrecurring and ongoing projects as assigned by the Communications Director. Serve as the assigned project coordinator on special projects as needed.
Other key duties as assigned by the Communications Director regarding digital marketing and communications needs.
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
- Superior knowledge of a wide variety of standard social media platforms and related performance metrics.
- Proficiency in website content management (using software such as WordPress), website optimization, and search engine optimization (SEO).
- Familiarity with relevant software such as Adobe CC (Illustrator, Indesign and Photoshop), and email marketing/contact management software (Cvent, Bronto, MailChimp, etc.).
- Superior written/verbal communication skills; copyediting skills; strong interviewing and research skills.
- Standard knowledge of AP Style; ability to write successfully in many other styles across multiple platforms (print, web, social media, various collateral material, etc.).
- Strong project management abilities; capacity to work independently and within a team environment, handle multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with others, both internally and externally.
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, or other disciplines related to the area of assignment.
- At least one year of professional experience working in the field of communications.
- General photography, videography and/or video editing skills is a plus.
- Communications experience and/or familiarity within the higher ed, government, public policy and/or non-profit sectors is strongly desired. Interest in public policy and/or civic engagement is beneficial.
