The Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society seeks an experienced and dynamic Director of Public Programming to oversee multiple aspects of outward-facing communications, community activity, and events specifically related to education and outreach. This role will operate in the spaces between research, community, communications, and events, and will translate the Center's research and educational activities to an external audience to aid in the dissemination of information and leverage our diverse internal community of staff, fellows, interns, collaborators, partners, and alums to help design and foster engagement opportunities.
The Director of Public Programming will develop and implement a strategic outreach plan for the Berkman Klein Center, in order to create a coherent substantive arc for the Center's various workshops, conferences, and other convening's to mindfully narrate the scope and range of the Center's research and educational initiatives while telling a comprehensive and intentional story. This role will also help to design cohesive pedagogical and organizational models across the Center's formal and informal educational initiatives, including Assembly; Techtopia; CopyrightX and any future online courses; as well as other flagship Center initiatives and events such as the weekly luncheon series and periodic book talks.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate appropriate credentials and substantial experience in the field of communications, education, cyberlaw, computer science, social sciences, or a related discipline. They will be integrated into the Center's research initiatives, possessing top academic experience and will capably represent the Center publicly while also keeping current with advances in the field and scanning the horizon for developments and opportunities. The Director of Public Programming will work closely with the Center's Executive Team, including the Executive Director, Research Director, and Financial Director.
Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to the following:
Drafting strategic priorities for the communications team (prioritization, providing direction, making staffing recommendations);
Creating and communicating a coherent set of narratives to bring our research projects to internal and external audiences;
Overseeing high-level planning of the center's event portfolio to reflect institutional priorities;
Leading the development and implementation of flagship educational programs;
Creating analytic frameworks and measuring impact;
Advising on the design and selection processes for Fellows recruitment processes and related community programming;
Developing and practicing ongoing outreach modes to engage Center alumni, donors, and other key stakeholders;
Managing 3 or more direct reports (including performance management, guidance on task prioritization and problem-solving, mentoring, coaching, and helping to support career development);
Formally and informally advising BKC staff on communications best practices both within the BKC ecosystem and in general;
Serving as a member of the Center's leadership team, helping to make decisions about processes, staffing, and issues as they arise.

Bachelor's degree plus a minimum of 7 years of professional experience in educational program design, strategic communications, or related field required.
Advanced degree in a related field preferred;
Experience conducting technical, substantive, and organizational work for academic or non-governmental organizations;
Broad knowledge of scholarly research, public policy and legislation, and industry developments in the fields of communication technology is critical, as is the ability to effectively communicate that knowledge to diverse public and private audiences;
Superior written and verbal communication skills;
Demonstrated sound judgment and exceptional ethical standards;
Comfortable working both independently and closely with teams and collaborators in a diverse, dynamic environment;
Heart, verve, and vigor; a can-do attitude; a very good sense of humor and a strong desire to affect change in the world.
