Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Marine Operations Financial Analyst to join the Marine Operations Department. This is a temporary, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for benefits.
Reporting to the Project Manager for Administration must be able to work independently performing a variety of accounting duties related to ship management projects for Marine Operations. Requires a solid understanding of accounting practices, project controls and systems. Experience compiling, interpreting and analyzing data, tracking budget versus actual costs, identifying variances and generating periodic reports. Basic understanding of ship operations and a willingness to expand tasks as required. Also administers an MS SharePoint site for document sharing and control and supports crew hiring processes and payroll administration.
Responsible for performing project accounting and reporting
Participates in the development of detailed budgets and financial structures
Performs project controls function monitoring/reviewing purchase requisitions and other planned expenditures to ensure consistency with the budgets and availability of funds.
Coordinates and monitors the change management process from initialization of a change to closure/funding.
Prepares and reconciles detailed budgets (operations, missions, management, projects). Inputs data into accounting systems. Tracks, reconciles and verifies entries to accounts including credit cards and petty cash; compiles and reconciles for approval.
Generates daily, monthly and yearly financial reports and analyses according to sponsor/WHOI specification.
Reconciles completed projects/tasks for closeout.
Prepares/assembles work papers, schedules and accounting summaries on a routine basis per sponsor/WHOI specification.
Verifies accuracy of financial accounting reports produced by the project.
Prepares purchase requisitions and purchase orders in WHOI and customer systems as required.
Supports monthly payroll review and validation/approval processes to ensure costs are accurate and vacation leave accrual is correct.
Responsible for remaining informed of FASB and GASB accounting regulations and applying them to coding, reporting, receipting, acknowledgement and designation.
Creates and maintains policies, procedures and processes for consistency in project accounting and reporting.
Verifies and oversees financial work-flow processing to ensure project deliverables are met.
Performs all other duties as the supervisor may from time to time deem necessary.

DESIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's Degree in Finance or Accounting desired.
3-5 years' financial analysis/accounting experience including revenue and expense analysis strongly desired.
Project Controls experience in a PMO strongly desired.
Advanced Excel experience a must; experience with accounting software and enterprise systems strongly desired.
MS SharePoint capability is a plus.
Capability with MS Office applications including PowerPoint required.
Organizational skills and attention to detail is critical. Works with minimal direction and relies on experience and judgment to accomplish tasks.
Ability to demonstrate hands-on experience in accounting and financial analysis a must.
Ability to work accurately and under pressure.
Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with both internal and external contacts.
Visual abilities to include near, far, and ability to distinguish basic colors. Other physical tasks include mostly sedentary work; use of hands for fine grasping and manipulation. Other occupational requirements include talking, working around others, and with others. Physical duties are subject to change.
