This position willensure efficient operation of the SimCenter's research computing center. Theposition is highly technical in nature, and duties include maintaining theresearch computing center environment, ensuring all server hardware is properlymaintained, and installing and patching operating systems. This position alsosupports applications that have an impact at the departmental, campus, andenterprise levels. The individual in this position will be required to keepabreast of various hardware/software technologies to plan for system/softwareimprovements, upgrades, and additions to improve overall function of theSimCenter research computing center. Knowledge of the security aspects of theaforementioned systems and software is of utmost importance. System duties areperformed on a variety of operating systems including Linux, Microsoft's serverproducts, and a variety of cloud-based hosting environments. This positionreports to the High Performance Computing Specialist at the SimCenter, who willestablish priorities and tasking for day-to-day work. Responsibilities include:
Research System and SoftwareImplementation: under the direction of the High Performance ComputingSpecialist, ensures the proper design of the research computing systems andsoftware; installing, configuring, and implementing new enterprise systems andsoftware; ensuring that overall architecture of new systems and softwareintegrates with the current environment; providing direction and guidance forexisting and emerging technologies and participate in complex andmission-critical technical analysis.
Research System and Software Support andMaintenance: maintaining and managing large systems, networks, software, and/ordatabases independently; resolving high-impact or high-urgency problems andincident management issues; coordinating with partner IT to supportdepartmental systems and access across campus to support research; fulfillingservice requests for systems, networks, software, and/or databases underposition responsibility; monitoringsecurity of systems, networks, software, and/or databases under positionresponsibility, including maintaining awareness of current and changing securitythreats and taking steps to mitigate/patch systems accordingly; providingsupport for cloud-based platforms and/or services; accountable for theperformance of systems, networks, software, and/or databases; performingroutine, complex, and emergency system, network, software, and/or databaseadministration tasks to ensure and maximize service availability; monitoringsystem performance and proposes software updates or parameter changes toenhance system performance; develops a plan for testing, implementing, andmeasuring the results of system performance; supporting users whorequest/require assistance using/implementing research computing hardwareand/or software; updating ticket tracking database with pertinent information.
Project Management: leading project teamsto implement new hardware, operating systems, software, and infrastructure tosupport the research computing center; leading projects, including planning,managing resources, and delivering final products; responsible for overall workefforts in the implementation of new hardware, operating systems, software, andinfrastructure to support the research computing center; directing andsupervising project team members' efforts; researching and training individualson new systems, networks, software, and/or database technologies.
