TheAssociate Director works with the Vice Provost for Research at VanderbiltUniversity serves as a campus-wide subject matter expert for theenterprise-wide electronic research administration system(s) overseen by theVPR. This system tracks the various states of the sponsored projectlifecycle and is the institutional record for sponsoredprojects. The position interacts with faculty, staff, and externalentities on a regular basis, particularly coordinating with research administratorsand faculty across campus on streamlining and documenting workflows andmanaging training related to the research administration system.
TheAssistant Provost also liaises with Vanderbilt University Academic AffairsInformation Process and Solution Implementations (AAPSI) on all softwareused/proposed for research administration.
The roleof the office has been expanded from its past definition based on facultyfeedback. In addition to overseeing the university's researchportfolio, the Vice Provost for Research also oversees implementation of theuniversity's new future vision and trans-institutional strategies and worksclosely with the Provost, academic Deans, the Vice Provosts, and the faculty atlarge to advance the quality of the research and scholarshipuniversity-wide. Our plans include developing strategies to enhanceextramural support for research and advanced studies from all sources –corporate, foundation, federal, and philanthropic, advancing a cohesive andvibrant international research agenda, and seeking key partnerships aroundshared priorities research. The Vice Provost works with theVanderbilt University Research Council in advocating for the research andscholarship missions of all disciplines at Vanderbilt.
Thisposition has supervisory responsibility over designated staff; the positionreports functionally and administratively to the Vice Provost for Research.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs as a leader in research administration
Identifies business process and procedural issues and solutions to improve the timeliness, transparency, and quality of research administration
Helps automate and streamline research administration on campus
Works collaboratively with Vanderbilt AAPSI to implement vendor-purchased solution with the goal of enabling system controls to support Vanderbilt policies and strategic goals
Provides support for maintaining and reporting on research activity, which includes building customized queries for the VPR and academic units
Supports the Pre-Award group with all system-to-system proposal software issues, ensuring successful submission
Works collaboratively with other Vanderbilt units to ensure that the interrelated research business processes are effective
Develops research administration IT systems andreporting and the research administration professional community
Addresses the essential components of the core enterprise system for electronic research administration
Identifies new strategic initiatives and opportunities in electronic research administration that will facilitate researcher and institutional strategic goals
Stays up to date with research administration changes and trends by attending conferences and joining relevant organizations
Works with peer groups and extramural groups to develop collaborative strategic goals for the research community to which Vanderbilt belongs (e.g., Federal Demonstration Partnership)
Maintains strong relationships with vendors of systems used by VPR and participates in appropriate user groups
Active involvement in national research administration professional organizations and maintenance of a professional network of other research administration professionals
Profile of an IdealCandidate:
Master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education in business, computer studies or similar field, or equivalent combination of education and experience is strongly preferred (Bachelor's degree and 8 years of experience are required).
Extensive knowledge and experience in university research administration is necessary
Experience with oversight of an electronic research system is necessary
Excellent skills in problem solving, data analysis, project management, change management and group process is necessary
