Each summer, the Division of Critical Care Medicine at Boston Children's Hospital offers an exciting learning opportunity for undergraduate students who are interested in a career in healthcare administration. Selected students will gain exposure to the multifaceted operations of a busy clinical Division within a large academic medical center in the Boston area. Through this administrative internship, students will become engaged in a combination of observational and project-based work while receiving guidance and mentorship from experienced healthcare professionals.
The summer intern will be precepted by a Division manager who will be responsible for providing the student with a broad range of learning opportunities depending on priorities of the Division, as well as the student's own professional interests. Previous administrative interns have gone on to accept full time job offers in the Division following graduation. This Critical Care intern will be responsible for:
Participation in administrative led projects ranging from all areas of the Division, including quality improvement, operations, finance, and graduate medical education. This also includes attending meetings regarding the specific project and preparing and presenting project work.
Observing clinical care on the Medical/Surgical ICU and speaking with providers.
Managing and analyzing data for quality improvement initiatives within the Division.
Attending case conference, morbidity and mortality, grand rounds or other medical education lectures of interest.
Attending management grand rounds at the hospital level.
Attending courses offered to hospital employees through the HR department including Lean 6 Sigma, Excel, and Introduction to Project Management.
Assisting in the planning and coordination of division-wide events such as the annual Fellow's Graduation Dinner and New Fellow Orientation.
To qualify, you must have:
At least one year of undergraduate coursework in a healthcare or business related field.
Availability to work 30 hours per week in the summer.
