The American Chemistry Council (ACC), a national trade association representing the world’s leading chemical and plastics manufacturers, currently has an opportunity for Senior Director, Packaging for its Plastics Division. ACC represents its members on public policy issues; coordinates the industry’s research and testing programs; and administers Responsible Care®, the industry’s environment, health, safety and security performance improvement initiative.
The position is responsible for serving as the senior staff lead for the Packaging Team and provides oversight to the self-funded Plastic Foodservice Packaging Group (PFPG) and Flexible Film Recycling Group (FFRG), including developing and providing strategic direction to the groups. The position works closely with members to build consensus and identify advocacy opportunities, as well as provides hands-on management of a large number of state and local advocacy initiatives. The position is also responsible for managing all aspects of the Packaging Team’s budget, effectively managing outside vendors, leading member meetings, as well as developing and maintaining essential relationships with allied organizations and groups along the packaging value chain. In addition the Senior Director manages PFPG and FFRG staff. The position reports directly to the Managing Director, Plastics.
Other key duties and responsibilities of the position directing development of technical and policy materials to support the Packaging Team, PFPG’s and FFRG’s goals and objectives and manages the development of education and communication vehicles, such as press releases, white papers, brochures and product stewardship and scientific publications; and serving as issue expert for the Packaging Team including, serving as the high-level relationship manager for purposes of managing issues, as needed, with external organizations and consultants.
Required qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in public policy, political science, or related field, Master or doctoral level degree in scientific and/or technical area preferred; ten years project/issue management experience, five years of issue advocacy, public policy or related experience, experience in an industry trade association, or in the plastics, packaging or consumer product sector preferred; strong written and oral communications skills, as well as the ability to give both internal and external presentations, the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, to absorb and assimilate information quickly, and to be an enthusiastic advocate as well as the ability to travel to support advocacy, including possible occasional international travel are a must. Certification in relevant specialty areas and membership in relevant professional societies are preferred.
