Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences seeks applicants for an assistant director of the Iowa Nutrient Research Center (INRC). This position will help lead the center and coordinate water quality research and extension programming. The Iowa Nutrient Research Center was established by the Iowa Board of Regents in response to legislation passed by the Iowa Legislature in 2013. The center pursues science-based approaches to improving water quality that include evaluating the performance of current and emerging nutrient management practices, providing recommendations on implementing the practices and developing new practices.
The assistant director is responsible for working with the director to fulfill the strategic direction and achievement of the center's and College of Agriculture and Life Sciences research and extension mission. Position will incorporate input from stakeholders and faculty and help direct collaborative research efforts on water quality and nutrient reduction strategies across Iowa. Position will take part in collaborative efforts of the center to pursue external funding as well as help coordinate the center's efforts to review, evaluate and fund Request for Proposals (RFP). Position will engage with state and federal agencies and represent the director where appropriate. Position helps lead and implement communication strategy and assists with responding to formal inquiries from elected officials, stakeholders, and constituents.
The successful candidate must possess the ability to effectively communicate and coordinate efforts across the organization and among external partners to achieve key deliverables. The ability to disseminate complex scientific material in writing and oral presentations to groups across Iowa is essential.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and 3 years of related experience; OR a Ph.D. or other professional degree and related experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Advanced degree in agronomy, ag and biosystems engineering, environmental sciences, economics or related field.
Experience in education or communication of complex issues to both academic, agency and general audiences.
Demonstrated experience and/or knowledge of Midwest agriculture and associated water quality challenges.
Demonstrated experience in project management, budgeting, grant writing and project reporting.
Documented record of developing and implementing extension and outreach programming including technology transfer, adult education, presentation and communication.
Experience in team facilitation, leadership and coordination.
