This position will operate under the Stat Lab Lead Technician, the Accessioning Supervisor, and the Biorepository Operations Manager to perform laboratory services related to specimen processing. This includes working with PIs and study coordinators to determine specific protocol requirements from multiple studies (internal and external collaborators). They are also responsible for the maintenance and monitoring of critical facility equipment used in the sample processing.
The primary purpose of this position is to provide sample processing and sample management support for the Indiana University Genetics Biobank Rapid Processing Laboratory. Perform separation of whole blood components according to specialized laboratory procedures in the rapid processing laboratory. Procedures include but are not limited to:
Document the receipt of samples for multiple studies.
Process blood, urine or other human specimens, per defined processing protocol and SOPs. Aliquot specimens, label aliquots and freeze within two hours of sample receipt.
Enter patient and specimen data in a laboratory information management system (LIMS).
Expected to modify and maintain appropriate documentation of processing activities.
Clearly communicate discrepancies with project managers.
Work quickly to resolve processing issues.
Prepare, label and organize samples per sample storage procedures.
Maintain a chain of custody tracking during sample transfer to the Indiana University Genetics Biobank for accessioning and storage.
Train in IATA shipping requirements. Ship samples locally and internationally.
Perform routine laboratory and equipment monitoring and maintenance as outlined in SOPs.
Perform various other lab duties as needed.
REQUIRED: Bachelor's Degree (BS/BA) in biology/chemistry/biotechnology or equivalent, plus 1 year of laboratory experience; OR Master's Degree (MS/MA) in biology/chemistry/biotechnology or equivalent,plus 6 months of laboratory experience.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities: Ability to use scientific rules for laboratory directives and for troubleshooting, ability to work in a fast paced environment, meet 2 hour processing deadline after specimen collection, strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to prioritize and manage time, able to work on multiple tasks and work well as part of a team, perform routine maintenance of laboratory equipment.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands:
Ability to communicate. Operate for sample processing, able to remain in a stationary position at laminar flow hood or stand for long periods of time.
