The Department of Art and Design at East Tennessee State University seeks applicants for a full-time, tenure-track hybrid position in studio art and art & design history, with a focus on graphic design, design history and related fields taught at undergraduate and graduate levels, beginning Fall 2019.
This is an interdisciplinary faculty position which will contribute to fostering a deeper awareness of critical and theoretical issues. Responsibilities include teaching a 3/3 load of undergraduate courses as well as graduate courses. Courses taught will include graphic design, the history of graphic design, the history of digital art, related topics such as graphic design theory and criticism and topics in their area(s) of specialization, as well as other courses such as studio and design foundations, capstone, thesis, and art appreciation. Ideal candidates will be committed to teaching and learning and will participate in curriculum development, advisement, department service, and mentorship, and will contribute to the intellectual and creative discourse of the university and the community. The person hired for this position will help students develop a strong understanding of the intersection of technology and artistic practices, and will maintain an active research program in communication design and art/design history or related fields.

An MFA degree in Graphic Design or closely related studio practice, or a Ph.D. in Design History or closely related field, or both.
Professional activity in both areas, such as evidence of active academic and creative research activity, including communication design practice, publications, exhibitions, conference presentations or similar activities.
Ability to teach courses in design, communication design, art/design history, and related theory and critical discourse.
Two or more years teaching studio classes and/or design history or a closely related field in a university setting as an instructor of record, with the ability to teach upper level courses and seminar or special topics courses in both areas. Commitment to service to the department, university, profession and community.
