The Post Publishing Board at Ohio University is looking for a Student Media Internship Manager for The Post Media Company, which includes an editorially independent student newspaper, website, podcasts, video and marketing solutions.
The Post was recently named one of the top non-daily student newspapers in the United States by the Society for Professional Journalists. The Internship Manager is responsible for developing an internship program that will train and provide mentoring for student media interns responsible for soliciting advertising and potentially other forms of revenue in support of the media organization. In addition, the manager will oversee all business functions of the company including branding, advertising sales/revenue generation for a print/digital media product, marketing, distribution, accounting, and ad development. The manager will liaison with other university officials, as necessary, concerning both strategic direction and transactional processing related to these business functions.
The Internship Manager will assist the independent editorial staff in understanding its audiences and options for creative products and services that will appeal to those audiences.
We are looking for an innovative leader who is able to coordinate and oversee robust experiential learning opportunities for a team of students to develop their ability to generate ad revenue, develop new/different revenue streams, oversee fiscal operations, and work collaboratively to oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization. The successful candidate will have vision for a contemporary, high-performing student media organization, experience mentoring students or young media sales professionals, and will be committed to creating a vibrant engaged learning opportunity for students working at The Post. In a time when advertising press revenues are shrinking, the candidate must also be able to innovate and create, with students, new products and services to meet clients' information and marketing needs.
The Internship Manager will be an integral member of the business team that includes advising from centers of excellence at Ohio University, including the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, the College of Business, the Schey Sales Center, the Consumer Survey Research Center and the Center for Entrepreneurship. The person in this position is expected to work closely with those organizations to meet the needs of the media company and the university.
This position requires a leader who will help students gain experiential learning in the fields of media, marketing, innovation, and entrepreneurship. This position will help students gain real world experience in a changing industry that has become even more important in our information-saturated age.
The internship manager will be expected to report directly to the board at least once a month and provide reports on revenues, expenses, and new initiatives. The business manager is also expected to consult closely with the Schey Sales Center and the Center for Entrepreneurship.
1. Responsible for coordinating and overseeing internship opportunities for students in support of all advertising, revenue generation, innovation, and sales related activities for The Post.
2. The Business Manager serves as the personnel manager for all business/advertising staff/interns. This includes serving as a leader for the unit and providing direction and support to all staff. This includes determination of personnel needs, mentoring, assessment of experiential learning, staff delegation of supervisory authority, work assignments, recruitment, onboarding, training, staff development, performance review, evaluation, and termination (when needed) of all non-editorial related staff.
3. Serve as the principal fiscal officer for the unit including fiscal control over all department finances. This includes responsibility for billing, collections, and all other accounting related details. Such work will be done in collaboration with other university offices. The Business Manager is also responsible for providing detailed revenue/expense reports to The Post Publishing Board.
4. Reporting to the Post Publishing Board and in collaboration with the Schey Sales Center, and the Center for Entrepreneurship, the Business Manager will be responsible for developing the overall mission, vision and direction for The Post business operations as well as supporting the overall mission of the greater University.
Bachelor’s Degree in related field. At least three (3) years of related working experience. At least three (3) years of management experience.
Master’s Degree preferred.
