This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
In collaboration with SDSU’s Director, Publications and Campaigns, the Science/Research Writer will work within the university to promote SDSU, and specifically its research mission, through Stratetigic Communication and Public Affairs's (StratComm) existing channels as well as employing creative new strategies. This includes originating, researching and writing stories for SDSU publications, video and other digital media. The editor will also place stories in the news media, blogs and specialty publications, guide StatComm’s video editor in creating research videos and mentor student assistants writing simple research copy. The editor will be involved in the development of 360 Magazine by assisting in writing, editing, proofing and creative strategizing.

Compensation and Benefits
Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $5,000 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,515 - $6,173 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

Entry to the first level within this classification requires knowledge of the fundamentals of public affairs and/or media relations, and/or some exposure to marketing and marketing research. This background normally is obtained through a college degree, which includes relevant coursework in the field, and up to two years of related professional or technical experience. In addition, a strong background in current science and research topics plus superior written and verbal communication skills with a solid foundation in grammar, spelling, and the composition of various communication vehicles are essential to initial entry to this classification.
Preferred Qualifications and Specialized Skills
Coursework in marketing, advertising, journalism, communications, public relations, related field, or sciences.
Master’s degree in marketing, advertising, journalism, communications, public relations, related field, or sciences.
Five years of experience working in and/or writing about science, research and technology.
Ability to gather and analyze scientific data and information and present it in a clear, coherent manner that can speak to a general audience.
Experience working at a research university to promote research/sciences.
Experience producing creative content for use in a variety of media including print, TV, radio, online and other new media.
Demonstrated experience using the Internet as part of a strategic communications/media relations campaign.
Understanding and experience working with new media to achieve communications objectives for a large, complex organization.
Ability to coordinate multiple activities simultaneously, and prioritize to effectively meet deadlines.
Knowledge of SDSU campus, its faculty, staff, students and key programs.
Associated Press style writing and editing skills.
Must have strong writing and editing skills, including writing and editing content for print/electronic publications and the news media.
Excellent organizational, oral communication, and interpersonal skills.
Computer skills to include extensive knowledge of Microsoft Window (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe, Photoshop, and web-based content management systems.
Ability to travel and attend off-campus appointments and events.
May, on occasion, be required to attend events or perform duties outside of normal work hours.
