The HarvardX Instructional Technologist collaborates with members of the HarvardX instructional development production teams in the development and delivery of high quality, high impact online learning experiences for HarvardX. The HarvardX Instructional Technologist reports to the Senior Manager, Program Operations and is integrally involved in the planning and execution of course build and manages the beta testing for HarvardX courses delivered on various platforms, including the edX platform. The Instructional Technologist manages the bug reporting process with edX and other platforms and is the primary point of contact for the platforms' technical support teams.
The successful HarvardX Instructional Technologist will be known for careful attention to detail and rigor in documentation, consistent work effort over time, the ability to problem solve and work independently, and the ability to frame concise questions for quick, effective discussion and action. The Instructional Technologist will excel at working on multiple projects and tasks at a time, successfully prioritizing work and anticipating issues and being proactive in offering solutions. The Technologist will be known for getting assignments done well and on time, and for bringing a proactive, collaborative attitude to their work.
Builds online learning experiences in the learning management platforms, including edX; primarily learning experiences requiring web design or web development skills in the platforms.
Works closely with Project Leads to customize and modify learning platforms to meet project needs, including offering suggestions on improved uses of technology to meet pedagogical needs. Develops and implements workarounds within learning platforms when appropriate.
Provides day to day support for tools developed in-house.
Serves as primary in-house technical support for edX and other platforms related to building courses in the system and is the main liaison with the platform support teams.
Manages the reporting and tracking of bugs on the learning platforms, notifying staff of outages and monitoring progress and offering work arounds.
Manages a team of temporary content developers who help with course build and check online learning experiences for quality assurance ('beta testing'), including vetting video transcriptions. This management includes prioritizing incoming projects for the team.
Designs and delivers hands-on technical training and workshops about building in the learning platforms and technology tools for Project Leads and HarvardX temporary content developers focused on course build and beta testing.
Creates user end documentation materials for both in-house tools and online services. Takes initiative to create processes and user end documentation for best practices for building courseware, using in-house products, and online services.
Creates simple media assets for online assessments.
Evaluates technological status of courses for rerun, including running the course through HXat tool.
Maintains and organizes project files; Collects weekly backups of currently active courseware.
Provides testing strategies and solutions.
Other related duties as assigned.

Candidates MUST meet the following basic qualifications in order to be considered for this role:
Extensive knowledge and experience working with the edX platform
Bachelor's degree preferred
Experience with instructional design and/or instructional technology within a higher education environment
Previous experience with learning management systems and content management systems
Experience with image and audio editing software
Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills
Excellent attention to detail and highly organized
Aptitude for learning and applying new technologies quickly and effectively
Ability to work consistently and constructively in a fast paced, highly matrixed environment
Ability to work independently, take initiative, and prioritize work effectively
Prior experience handling confidential matters with appropriate discretion
Basic knowledge of Python or R
