Position Summary: Reporting to the Director of Marketing, the Marketing & Strategic Content Writer position (Writer) is responsible for developing marketing copy to support the university's overall brand presence in the higher education marketplace as well as its enrollment and recruitment goals. In collaboration with marketing leadership, the Writer develops effective copy for recruitment materials and direct marketing campaigns. The Writer works with the social, brand, enrollment and college marketing teams to develop content ideas, stories and messaging consistent with the university's communications and marketing strategies; curate university rankings and proof points; contribute to university publications as needed to enhance university messaging as well as web and other communication tools as appropriate to promote key initiatives. The Writer works closely with the creative services digital media and design teams to create effective, objective-oriented marketing collateral words, effectively shaping conversations around U of I's brand with a variety of target demographics. The Writer serves as the primary writer for unit marketing and purpose-driven collateral, developing/overseeing ad copy/scripts for traditional media (print, radio, television, OOH) as well as new media (social, email, search engines, web, video and digital). The Writer edits marketing materials from across the university and assists on stories of mutual interest as needed.
Bachelors degree and a minimum of three years relevant experience or a combination of related education and related experience totaling at least seven years;
Experience writing for both direct marketing channels (e.g., print, email, web) and advertising channels (e.g., tv, radio, billboards, social, digital display and search engines);
Knowledge of social and video/digital media planning and practice as well as story/content development;
Experience interviewing, interpreting, translating and writing specialized material in an interesting way so that target audiences can understand it and are inspired to act;
Demonstrated exceptional writing skills and complementary verbal communication skills;
Experience identifying, gathering and developing marketing copy and content for specialized audiences and delivering them using a variety of communication platforms;
Experience editing and proofreading in a business setting;
Word processing and general computer skills;
Demonstrated knowledge of effective marketing concepts, techniques and platforms.
Experience working in higher education;
Experience developing a brand voice for mass distribution/consumption;
Experience writing marketing materials directed toward youth and influencer markets;
Experience writing video or audio scripts;
Academic background in brand or enrollment marketing;
Understanding of digital photography, video and web-based communication.
