Reporting to the Director of International Affairs (OIA), the Assistant Director assumes responsibilities in three primary functional areas of educational outreach to support the mission of the office, division and university; dissemination of information of events, activities, immigration and visa; advising international students in matters related to immigration and issues of academic, personal, cultural, and social adjustment.
Responsible for developing, coordinating, promoting, implementing, and evaluating programs and activities throughout the year, including Pre-departure and on- campus Orientation, that facilitate enhanced leadership, communication, community involvement, cross-cultural friendships, and adjustment to the US culture and Pratt campus life.
Serve as a resource for international students, scholars, and the multicultural campus community, networking closely with campus services and programs and the Student Involvement Office.
Provide training and supervision to student staff, peers, and volunteers.
Organize and oversee International Welcome day activities: create schedule, arrange special speakers, coordinate presentations and student activities, work with catering staff, and supervise student ambassadors.
Assist with social and cultural programs such as the Annual International Food Fair, International Education Week, the Korean BBQ and Mid-Autumn Festival, Diwali,etc.
Liaison to the Global Education Learning Community.
Manage and maintain Peer-to-Peer Program designed to pair up students, plan events and associated activities.
Serves as Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternative Responsible Officer (ARO).
Keeps abreast of immigration law and regulations.
Assist and process initial I-20s for SCP, Ed., Pre-College and Pratt MWP.
Assist with mandatory Department of Homeland Security (DHS) regulation changes such as data correction, name changes, social security, and driver's license.
Point person for resolving time sensitive matters (lost passport, I20, ) signatures, and immigration transactions, CPT, OPT and transfers.
Assist with SEVIS registration in fall, spring, and summer semesters and collect documents from students in statuses.
Responsible for providing service to students and other constituents with compliance to the various Federal Regulations.
Communicate, guide and assist the new students with trouble shooting the digital I20 process, digital I-94 Entry Record.
Advisor to the Pratt International Student Association.
Manage and maintain the International Student website, Facebook and all other forms of interactive communication.
Manage OIA monthly Newsletter.
Communicate with academic departments, Residential Life, Intensive English Program and Admissions about delayed arrivals – get academic departments to send permission for late arriving students, coordinate and reschedule check in appointments, and English placement exams.
Point person for communicating with internship coordinators at Pratt in regards to CPT.
Point person for IT related issues that affect whole office.
Perform all other related duties as assigned.
Education: Master's degree in the field of Student Affairs, International Education, or other related field.
Minimum two years' related experience, three to five years preferred; experience working in higher education and supervising employees preferred.
Demonstrated interest, ability, and experience in working with student groups, and ability to serve as a catalyst for collaborative efforts to develop programs and activities for the international community.
Experience in advising international students on F-1 and J-1 pertinent to immigration, cultural adjustment, academic issues, and personal matters required; Knowledgeable of F-1 and J-1 immigration regulations, SEVIS system, and database Thorough understanding of the role of international student adviser, student development theory, including cross-cultural adjustment.
Demonstrated ability to positively relate to international students. Experience with and enjoy event planning and programming.
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work well with faculty, staff, and students; ability to exercise sounding judgement in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with university stakeholders.
Project-management experience preferred.
Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational and planning skills. Effective communication skills, both written and oral.
Ability to develop and deliver presentations and orientation programs. Ability to work as part of a team and service-oriented work environment.
Knowledge and Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel or other database and reporting software; experience in social media.
