Poynter guides enterprising journalists, teaching them to take their ideas from concept to revenue-generating reality, and you’ll play a critical role in nurturing the ideas and encouraging the execution.
Journalists everywhere — from major news organizations to media startups — turn to Poynter to train their current leaders and groom future standouts. You’ll work as a coach and teacher in the world’s largest media organizations as well as have the opportunity to make a big impact on small newsrooms and startups. As a result, you gain an unparalleled vantage point of the news ecosystem.
The successful candidate will help enterprising journalists take their ideas from concept to revenue-generating reality.
He/she will be responsible for creating and delivering training and thought leadership to the journalism industry in the areas of using technology for newsgathering and to deliver cutting-edge storytelling.
Leadership through craft: He/she will contribute to the Institute’s teaching, focusing on how journalists can maintain relevance in a rapidly changing industry. Additionally, this faculty member will contribute to Poynter’s teaching around the topics of leadership, ethics, writing and/or diversity.
Providing content with impact on all platforms: The faculty member will contribute to the journalism ecosystem by posting regularly on Poynter.org.
The faculty member, individually and collectively:
Teaches with expertise and inspiration in-person, through writing/videos/podcasts and e-learning.
Creates new knowledge through research, and then broadly shares it through innovative and substantive teaching, publication, and service to the profession.
Works directly with journalists and newsrooms to create and deliver relevant training.
Stays on the cutting edge through relevant reading, professional connections and practice.
Develops and implements the Institute’s academic programs and curriculum in collaboration with the Senior Vice President, and in concert with the priorities of his/her role.
Shares in the collegial conversation and life of the Institute, creates an environment for coaching, support, and collaboration with colleagues.
Takes responsibility for self-development in gaining new skills and knowledge, with coaching from the Senior Vice President.
Performs journalism public service within the industry and the community under the auspices of the Institute.
Consults on the hiring of faculty and the selection of visiting scholars and professionals.
Makes appearances on national television and radio programs as an expert, and gets quoted by news organizations.
Other duties as assigned.
At least 10 years in journalism, with at least three in a leadership position
A record of editorial accomplishment and innovation in a multimedia environment
Demonstrated proficiency with cutting-edge storytelling and newsgathering practices
Ability to travel frequently, including international travel
Persuasive writing skills
Strong public speaking chops — or the potential to develop them
Experience recruiting, hiring, developing and evaluating journalists
Commitment to diversity
Ability to analyze media business models
Familiarity with a range of leadership styles
An existing network of media contacts
Ability to move to Tampa Bay
Employer will assist with relocation costs.
Additional Salary Information: Annual Salary Range: $80k-$110k plus relocation benefit of up to $10k
