The job holder will be responsible for strategic oversight and management of all legal and regulatory investigations. To include all contentious regulatory and enforcement matters, and material financial crime related legal risk issues relating to Santander UK plc and its group companies (the "Bank"), such activities referred to below as "Contentious Regulatory". Contentious Regulatory matters range from large scale UK and overseas law-enforcement and regulatory investigations with risk of material impact on financial statements and reputation, to provision of strategic legal advice in connection with legal risk issues including enquiries or information requirements from law-enforcement or regulatory authorities.

As a Managing Legal Counsel your main responsibilities will be to
Provide pragmatic, strategic and business focused legal advice to seek to mitigate/optimise risk in respect of all matters within remit with holistic view of legal, financial crime, regulatory, conduct and reputational risks.
Set relevant policies and standards, manage and provide oversight of disputes relating to Bank services and operations.
Provide legal input to drive continuous improvement of relevant Bank policy and standards including in relation to financial crime and management of strategic or complex matters which originate legal and/or regulatory risk, including direct interaction with law-enforcement and regulatory authorities.
Efficiently manage team resources, engaging and nourishing team members through coaching, promoting well-being, and giving support.
Provide strategic input to relevant risk management fora including inputs from stakeholders and sharing outputs, engagement in industry bodies, engaging with regulators and government and supporting responses to consultations and proposed legislative change.
Minimum skills and experience required
Must hold either a current Solicitors Practising Certificate for England and Wales or be fully admitted to the English Bar or hold a Scottish or foreign jurisdiction capable of conversion.
Expertise in managing high value, complex, and/or strategically important legal investigations and contentious regulatory matters.
Team management experience.
Experience of policy design and oversight, including experience of preparation and delivery of briefing papers and succinct commercial legal advice to senior management in committees and other fora.
Demonstrably thorough understanding of retail and corporate banking, its drivers, challenges and market practices.
Good working knowledge of the UK regulatory framework for financial services products and services.
