OAG Communications Specialist
The Johns Hopkins University seeks a skilled editorial professional to join the Office of Annual Giving (OAG) in the division of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR). Serving as writer and editor for DAR, this position will have the primary duty of illustrating the role of philanthropy through solicitations, acknowledgement letters, donor recognition programs, and stewardship materials for students, faculty, alumni, and friends of the institution. The incumbent will organize, implement, and manage projects, and serve as central writer for various development units across the institution. Collaborate with DAR colleagues in the creation, design, and production of institutional solicitations, acknowledgments, and stewardship materials.
1.With supervision, facilitate correspondence and writing projects, from inception through delivery.
Collaborate with department-specific development offices to create a content strategy for annual solicitations and other correspondence, such as stewardship materials vital to the continuation of funding.
Facilitate the creation of no less than 20 solicitations or acknowledgment pieces per month.
Research, compose, and review letters, email, and social media content, and other written materials in conjunction with offices across the Johns Hopkins Institutions.
Generate content specific text, video, and pictures when needed for social media sites targeting the conversation with content specific to the institution as a whole, as well as for each development office partaking in a particular giving event.
2. Assist the OAG leadership including Executive Director of Annual Giving in the management of the solicitation calendar and strategy.
Demonstrate superior writing, project management, and problem-solving skills, as well as communicate information of a highly complex nature in a clear, precise, and compelling way. Perform independent research, when necessary, on projects
3. Demonstrate excellence in grammar, style, syntax, and copy editing, and provide copy editing and proofreading services to other offices when needed.
4. Perform effectively as a collaborative member of the Office of Annual Giving and the Development and Alumni Relations Team, as well as performing other duties as assigned.
Collaborate with DAR staff on best practices in content marketing and design while obtaining a breadth and depth of knowledge of each development unit being served.
Know the formal and informal departmental goals, standards, policies and procedures including familiarity with other departments and divisions within the University.
Is sensitive to the interrelationship of both people and functions within the department. Is comfortable with the facilitation of communication among colleagues and actions as they pertain to successful completion of tasks.
Exchange non-routine, and often confidential information using tact and persuasion as requires outstanding oral and written communication skills.
Two years college coursework required.
Some related experience required.
Demonstrated understanding of and experience with annual fund solicitation and acknowledgment strategies for direct mail, e-philanthropy, and social media.
Experience in conceptualizing, developing, designing copy to reflect distinct voices and to appeal to differing constituencies.
Strong organizational and time management skills; and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously, with careful attention to detail.
Demonstrate excellence in grammar, style, syntax, and copy editing, and provide copy editing and proofreading services to other offices when needed
Ability to work effectively under pressure of deadlines, and collaboratively.
Excellence in written communication and editorial skills (including excellence in grammar, style, syntax, and copy editing).
Excellent PC skills and proficiency with the use of Microsoft Office, specifically Word and Excel, and Adobe InDesign. Ability to work effectively under pressure of deadlines.
Bachelor's degree required in a related field, such as English, Communications, or Marketing;
Two years related experience in communications and writing within higher education preferred.
Ability to create or facilitate the creation of design projects including videos.
Understanding of best practices preferably in a higher education setting.
Experience interviewing university leaders, fundraisers, and faculty members across a wide range of disciplines
