The Fire Prevention Coordinator works in PSU's Emergency Management department and is responsible for assisting the Director of Emergency Management develop a culture of preparedness and resiliency within the University through prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.
In collaboration with key internal and external stakeholders, the Fire Prevention Coordinator identifies hazards, conducts risk assessments, prescribes corrective actions, and provides leadership in the implementation of programs to protect campus students, staff, and facilities.
This position requires someone who is comfortable working occasional flexible hours (e.g. facilitating fire drills occurring outside of normal campus operational hours) and someone who can be on-call / available (within reason) to respond to campus during emergency situations.
This position requires someone who is a self-starter, innovative, and can work independently to complete projects. Work is performed under moderate supervision and performance is based upon completion of assignments and results obtained.
Bachelor's degree with primary focus in engineering, fire science, emergency management or similar field; or satisfactory equivalent combination of education, experience and/or professional certification.
A minimum of two years of relevant professional experience in, or in a work area directly related to, developing and implementing fire and life safety programs for a higher education, research or similar institution.
Experience conducting inspections, reading building plans, and applying codes and standards.
Successful completion of a background check
Knowledge and understanding of fire code, fire prevention practices, and fire detection, alarm and suppression systems.
Experience working effectively in higher education or other complex organizations / campuses.
Effective oral and written communication skills sufficient to convey essential fire and life safety requirements, document policies, and provide guidance to members of the University community at all levels.
Proven ability to perform work safely and in a professional, collaborative manner with consideration for the needs of the campus faculty, staff and students.
Effective computer and project management skills.
NFPA 1031 Certified Fire Inspector, Certified Fire Protection Specialist, or similar certification, knowledge or experience.
Familiarity with emergency management principles and practices (e.g. certification in or direct experience with the Incident Command System (ICS), development of Emergency Operations Plans and supporting documents, Continuity of Operations Planning (COOP), exercise development and execution, or other similar training or experience).
