We are looking for the ideal Farm Manager to help us design and build a 55-acre, off-grid, self-contained, farm-based family retreat near Washougal in Washington State with additional accommodation for an extended family of up to 150 people, then manage it and be self-sufficient within two years after completion, receiving a subsistence salary until then.
We want this to be a full-feature farm including a wide variety of different crops and livestock. Plans currently include 3 wells, a pond for raising tilapia, substantial greenhouse, large kitchen for value added farm products, equipment, vehicles, workshops, solar/wind/hydro/geothermal power, barn, coups and storage.
The Farm Manager will be expected to:
work with our project manager and development engineers in the design and construction.
host family members who wish to temporarily stay at the farm.
manage every aspect of the farm, including financial budgeting, reserves, labor & support workers, equipment, systems, soil, water, power, septic, crops, livestock, harvesting, preserving, packaging, marketing, customer service, performance record keeping and quality assurance.
submit a brief monthly 1-2 page status report with highlights, lowlights, problems and plans.
manage upkeep and some improvement projects related to the retreat.
continuously and urgently work toward process improvement, potentially leveraging programs such as the WSU Agriculture Program in Vancouver to optimize every aspect of farm operation.
We are looking for a knowledgeable, responsible, dependable, flexible, team-oriented, honest, articulate, hard-working, “can-do” farm manager.
The ideal candidate would have:
A bachelor’s degree or higher in Agriculture, Animal Science or related field.
Accreditation as a Farm Manager by an organization such as ASFMRA.
Willingness to consider a long-term relationship.
Experience in all aspects described above including greenhouse design, personnel management, equipment, regulatory compliance, finance, record keeping, livestock, agronomy, preserving, marketing and quality assurance.
Familiarity with farm management software and Microsoft® programs, E-mail, Word, Excel.
Familiarity and support of permaculture and organic products would be a plus.
Employer will assist with relocation costs.
Additional Salary Information: The Farm Manager can keep all profits as if owning this farm. Expenses would be significantly reduced because expenses such as property tax, principle and interest on any loans for land, home or equipment, and utilities such as power, water or sewer would be provided free. Subsistence salary will be provided for up to 2 years after farm is essentially completed.
