This position provides leadership for the daily and strategic operations for CSE External Relations department by overseeing development operations including donor stewardship, campaign management, gift processing and acknowledgement, fund management, annual giving, and budget. This position also collaborates with Sr. Director of External Relations to determine upcoming and future priorities, and participates in the department strategic planning process. Works to foster lasting relationships between the College of Science and Engineering and its benefactors, promoting positive attitudes toward giving among current and prospective major and planned gift donors. Additionally, this position is responsible for managing all aspects of the college's comprehensive campaign, including volunteer support.
40%: Stewardship Director Plan, strategize and lead all donor stewardship efforts, including but not limited to:
Develop and execute programs to report on impact of gifts to donors and to recognize their giving, including the creation and management of a comprehensive system of donor recognition such as donor walls, listings, impact reports, and personal meetings with beneficiaries.
Conduct research necessary to create donor reports (written and video) for endowed and specified demand funds including faculty chairs and professorships, fellowships, scholarships, awards, research funds, etc.
Oversee collegiate recognition program for leadership annual donors.
Create and oversee maintenance of policies and procedures for all stewardship functions.
Develop and prepare the annual report to donors.
Oversee and develop all stewardship related content on the college's website.
Work closely with fundraising and communications colleagues to provide appropriate donor recognition through publications such as Inventing Tomorrow and Legacy, and on the college's website.
Lead efforts to plan and implement major donor recognition on donor walls, named spaces, etc. Analyze and determine gift amounts required for named spaces.
Work with Student Services and academic departments to ensure that gift criteria established by each donor and agreed upon by the college are met.
Identify and implement opportunities to connect with and engage donors and fund recipients.
Oversee the production of all dean's acknowledgment letters.
Review and modify as necessary, the acknowledgment process to ensure donors are thanked in a personal, timely and appropriate manner by the External Relations department.
Manage a small portfolio (15-20) of donors who are in stewardship.
Ensure timely steps are taken toward the stewardship of assigned prospects.
Collaborate with CSE colleagues on donor strategies and maintain timely, accurate reports and information.
Develop and implement individualized engagement opportunities for stewardship donors.
40%: Campaign Manager
As a member of the campaign management team, provide strategic planning and organization for the college's comprehensive capital campaign, and serve as a member of all six staff campaign work teams.
Manage all aspects of CSE campaign operations for the $250 million goal.
Collaborate with leadership campaign volunteers and external relations staff to provide the information they need to cultivate and solicit campaign gifts and provide appropriate follow up on solicitations.
Partner in management of relationships with campaign volunteer committee through regular contact with volunteers and assessment of their needs, including preparation of materials for the campaign volunteer app.
Ensure campaign operations are moving along according to the established campaign time-line and direct the administrative aspects of the campaign.
Analyze, manage and maintain prospect pipelines, prospect tracking, strategy, and maintenance of time- lines.
Analyze database information and prepare ad hoc campaign reports and recommendations.
Write and manage production of campaign materials and reports.
Oversee and maintain master campaign calendar to maximize cultivation events and ensure campaign committee is on track.
Organize and monitor volunteer assignments and follow-up, and collaborate with development officers in all aspects of volunteer-led events.
Plan, develop, and staff two to four volunteer campaign committee meetings annually.
Partner on preparation of meeting agendas that engage and cultivate campaign volunteer leadership.
Collaborate with CSE students, faculty and staff to ensure that volunteers are exposed to aspects of the college that align with campaign priorities.
Collaborate with a variety of internal constituencies, including the CSE Dean's office, communications staff, faculty, department heads, and the University of Minnesota Foundation, as well campaign volunteers in the execution of the campaign.
Collaborate with Sr. Director of External Relations to plan, develop, and staff the Dean's Advisory Board meetings (two per year).
Partner on preparation of meeting agendas that engage and cultivate volunteer leadership.
Prepare and distribute meeting materials to Advisory Board members.
Collaborate with CSE students, faculty and staff to ensure that volunteers are exposed to aspects of the college that align with college priorities.
10%: Oversight of annual giving program
Supervise and direct the work of the Director of Annual Giving.
Oversee strategy to meet and progress towards yearly goals.
Recommend annual giving yearly budget.
Guide the growth of the program with an eye towards securing leadership annual gifts that will fill out the pipeline of for future campaigns.
Oversee annual giving metrics and progress towards goals to ensure that program will meet stated targets.
Provide guidance on key messages included in solicitation and acknowledgement letters.
10%: Development Operations oversight
Develop, recommend, help prioritize departmental budget.
Responsible for alignment, planning and oversight of development operations including but not limited to gift processing, fund administration, campaign management, prospect pipeline analysis, securing prospect meetings, gift acknowledgment and stewardship.
Partner with Sr. Director of External Relations to help set strategic direction for department.
Supervise the Development Operations Coordinator and provide overall management of assigned duties.
Establish and maintain policies and practices around development operations and management.
Collaborate with collegiate and departmental staff to ensure that donor privacy policies are followed.
Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of the vision and philanthropic priorities of CSE.
Required: Candidates must have a Baccalaureate degree and at least five years of progressive responsibility in alumni relations/advancement operations, or a combination of experience in a closely related field, to include managing volunteers and working with volunteer advisory boards; demonstrated understanding of fundraising.
Preferred: Preference will be given to candidates with development operations experience in higher education, especially in annual giving and/or stewardship ,and/or campaign management; familiarity with multi- and social media; demonstrated ability to effectively utilize volunteers in fundraising efforts; and campaign fundraising experience. Candidates should have a proven ability to work effectively with a diverse group of constituents; strong organizational skills; strong writing ability; creativity, enthusiasm and a sense of humor; willingness to occasionally work evenings.
