The Communications and Digital Content Specialist is responsible for planning and executing external communications programs in support of the Manager of Communications, Marketing and Digital Content, to whom the Specialist reports. This position will play a key role in assisting with the development and implementation of media relations, social media, communications, and marketing strategies to promote Planned Parenthood of Illinois, Planned Parenthood Illinois Action (PPIA) and Planned Parenthood Illinois Action PAC. A collaborative style, strong work ethic, and enthusiasm for building bridges are essential.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Developing and implementing external communications and marketing strategies to educate and inform the community about PPIL’s mission, programs, and services. 2. Supporting implementation of PPIL’s strategic plan and reporting communications and marketing activities. 3. Drafting press statements, press releases, op-eds, media advisories, and letters to the editor; editing and reviewing external communications materials. 4. Fielding media inquiries, coordinating interviews for staff and drafting talking points 5. Tracking local media, public affairs issues, and the health care community across our region to identify communications and marketing opportunities. 6. Maintaining a database of media relations contacts; preparing collections of significant media clips. 7. Assisting in the development and coordination of marketing and media-related campaigns, events, and trainings. 8. Providing strategy for content, branding, and voice across PPIL and PPIA’s digital platforms. 9. Maintaining exceptional relationships with PPIL staff, representatives from the media, and community organizations; maintaining an in-depth knowledge of Planned Parenthood’s mission, programs, and services, and public affairs issues. 10. Assisting in the maintenance of PPIL and PPIA websites, fielding requests from staff, and following best practices for web content. 11. Drafting and launching emails to PPIL and PPIA supporters; setting up landing pages for fundraising or public policy activations as needed. 12. Monitoring effective benchmarks for measuring the impact of social media and online campaigns; analyzing, reviewing and reporting on effectiveness of campaigns in an effort to maximize results. 13. Assisting affiliate staff with data management related to supporter list database(s) and online platforms.
Other Functions 14. Assisting in administrative duties, including data gathering and generating reports. 15. Supervising communications and marketing interns and volunteers. 16. Status: Full-time, exempt from the overtime provisions of wage and salary regulations.
• Commitment to PPIL’s mission, purpose, and values. • A smart, intellectually curious, strategic and creative professional with Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university, three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. • Must be a motivated self-starter and able to function effectively with a degree of autonomy. • Established relationships with media in the fields of health care, sex education, and public affairs is a plus. • Superb writing and editing skills, including the ability to carefully target messaging, quickly turn around materials, and respond to current events. • Direct experience implementing messaging strategy, and marketing campaigns, and experience crafting creative online messaging, and/or online organizing/advocacy communications for various audiences. • Ability to distill complicated issues and research for messaging to multiple audiences. • Experience with an email marketing platform, social media strategy and tools including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Microsoft Office, web page development and/or maintenance. • A multi-disciplinary thinker with excellent analytical skills and the ability to understand new concepts and complex subjects, to translate PPIL’s mission and work to diverse constituencies, to solve problems and to exercise good judgment in a fast-paced environment. • Ability to prioritize work on a number of ongoing projects. • Commitment to exceptional work quality and standards. • Principled, ethical, and professional. • A high level of enthusiasm, energy, initiative, and drive.
This position requires interaction with staff at all levels in a fast-paced environment with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality, demonstrated ability to work effectively and meet deadlines in high-pressure situations, and good judgment. The Specialist must bring a positive “can-do” attitude, be flexible, have attention to detail, have strong decision-making ability, and work well both independently and collaboratively as part of a team. In keeping with the position, the Specialist may be required to work evening and weekend hours or irregular hours depending on the activity and event schedule, and will have to travel throughout the state, intermittently.
