Cal Poly is seeking a skilled writer and communications strategist to join our team in the Office of the Provost. This professional has the opportunity to shape the provost's messaging strategy, including its end-to-end implementation, to fuel the success of the Academic Affairs division. This position is suited to a dynamic communications specialist skilled at collaboration within complex institutions.
The communications specialist will develop and execute a strategic and brand-aligned communications plan for the Office of the Provost and Academic Affairs division. The person in this position would create and oversee all internal and external communications, including publications, collateral, websites, digital outreach and video, for the Office of the Provost. This position will also gather and present metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies that accomplish a variety of timely objectives.
This position works under the general direction of the provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs. The role requires a significant degree of collaboration with other university departments, resources and professionals to promote the impact of the Academic Affairs division on campus and beyond.
The Team/ The Department
The Office of the Provost and its functions are supported by the Provost and vice president for Academic Affairs and three professional staff members. As the chief academic officer for the university, the provost and executive vice president provides leadership to the Academic Affairs division. Academic Affairs is the largest of the four organizational divisions of Cal Poly encompassing the six colleges as well as multiple administrative areas that support students during their academic experience.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university and three years of progressively responsible experience in marketing and public relations, or a related field. A graduate degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Demonstrated expertise in the development of strategic communications and messaging.
Demonstrated project coordination skills and ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline driven environment.
Working knowledge of and ability to apply standard theories, practices, principles and techniques related to strategic communication
Demonstrated ability to research and identify communication needs and target audiences
Thorough knowledge of web communication techniques, vehicles and formats and ability to effectively use web technology, including social media, to achieve communication goals.
Thorough knowledge of AP Style, English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
Strong writing and speaking skills, with a demonstrated ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner to multiple audiences using multiple modalities.
Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the university with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate, including involvement with teams led by others and in leading teams comprised of colleagues who may report to others.
Demonstrated ability to work independently in a highly collaborative, cross-functional teaming atmosphere.

Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to work additional hours, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
This position classification has been defined as 'Exempt' and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
